Men's Soccer Rally In Second Half, Advance To CACC Title Game

Box Score

When and Where: November 2 - Men's Soccer Semi Final - Post vs Georgian Court - LaMoy Field

Results: Post 3 - 1 Georgian Court

The Eagles used their high-powered offense to bounce back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Lions of Georgian Court, 3-1.

GCU struck first with about two minutes left in the first half when Vinicius Monteiro converted on a free kick from the top of the box.

Outside of the lone goal, the first half was played evenly. Both teams took seven shots and had two corners.

Ted Haley gathered his men together at halftime and prepared them for what could have been the final half of their 2018 season.

The eagles came out as strong as ever and tied the game at 1-1 less than ten minutes into the second half. After a plethora of chances, Sergio Diaz earned a corner kick and planted a cross on the head of Francesco Perienelli and into the back of the net.

Fast-forward exactly five minutes and the eagles struck again. After Andreas Time ripped a shot off the keeper, Sergio Sanchez collected the rebound and went five-hole to put the eagles up 2-1. Momentum was very clearly on the side of Post, and they would not let go of it.

With GCU desperate for a game-tying strike, Post was finding more and more open space on the field as the second rolled on. With about 20 minutes left, Sergio Sanchez controlled the ball, moving from left to right as he crossed midfield. After pushing forward another 15 yards he delivered a beautiful ball to Sergio Diaz who put the nail in the coffin with his 13th goal of 2018.

The Sergio-Sergio connection would prove to be the final goal in a game that featured 37 total shots, 23 total fouls and two yellow cards.

"I am extremely proud of my guys today because of the execution of our game plan and our attention to detail", Haley said.

Post controlled play for the majority of the game, leading in shots: 24 (14) to 14 (9). They truly clamped down and played excellent team ball once they gained the lead. Ball control and quality passing allowed the eagles to maintain possession and limit GCU's chances at a comeback.

Fredrik Pedersen played another solid game in goal, collecting eight saves.

"To our credit the boys were mentally strong enough and we showed our resilience. We played great soccer in the second half and got the goals we deserved", Haley said. "The final on Sunday is our new mission and now we are only focused on preparation towards a great performance. We are excited as a trip to the NCAAs is on the line and we are hungry for a title."
