Eagles Split on Second Day of Long Island Invitational

Post Heads Into Home-Opener at 2-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Post finished its weekend with a split on day two of the Long Island Invitational in Old Westbury, N.Y. on Saturday. The Eagles were defeated by the hosts NYIT in the morning but came out on top against Saint Anselm 3-0 in the second match of the day. Post now sits at 2-2 heading into its home-opener Tuesday against Molloy.
 
NYIT 3, Post 0 (19-25, 17-25, 23-25)
NYIT came out of the gate with six straight points in the first set to force a timeout by Post. Out of the break, the Eagles began to climb back as junior Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) had three straight kills to help cut the deficit to 7-4. The Bears continued to keep a distance, but a kill by freshman Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and two attack errors by NYIT brought Post within two.
 
Junior Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) had two early aces to help give the Eagles a 4-1 lead in the second set. NYIT used a 9-2 run to take a 10-6 lead and the Bears never looked back. Griffin had a team-high four kills in the set.
 
Post held the lead for a majority of the third set and was ahead 9-5 early after a point by junior Heaven Daluz (New Haven, Conn.). The Bears cut the deficit to just one, but the Eagles continued to score and led 16-11. After NYIT tied the score 21-21, German scored a kill and the Bears had an error to give the Eagles a late lead. NYIT scored the final three points to earn the victory.
 
Post 3, Saint Anselm 0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21)
Griffin played well against for Post in the second match of the day as she finished with 13 kills. 15 digs, and three block assists. The Eagles scored the final five points in a back and forth first set the featured 11 ties. Griffin had six of her kills in the opener.
 
Post fell behind 5-2 in the second set until kills by German and Seger sparked a 7-2 run that gave the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. With the score 12-11 in favor of Post, the Eagles scored four straight points give themselves a comfortable five-point cushion. Saint Anselm would never get closer than four the rest of the way.
 
The Eagles jumped ahead 5-2 in the third but the Hawks quickly answered to tie the score. The teams traded points until kills by Griffin and freshman Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) put Post ahead 15-12. Saint Anselm responded with three point of its own to tie the set. Senior Mariah Morris (Vilseck, Germany) had three kills as the Eagles closed out the match on a 7-2 run.
 
Post will play its home-opener on Tuesday night against Molloy. First serve at the Drubner Center is set for 7 p.m.
