PREVIEW: Showdown With Regionally-Ranked Wilmington Highlights No. 15 Men’s Soccer Week

WATERBURY, Conn. – The No. 15 Post University men's soccer team looks to extend its winning streak with two games on the road this week. The Eagles are at Caldwell on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. and visit Wilmington on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. Post has won four straight games coming into the week and boasts one of the top defenses in NCAA Division II.
 
Last Time Out: Post 4, Holy Family 0 – Box Score | Recap
The Eagles won their fourth straight game on Sunday at home against Holy Family. Sophomore Francisco Sastre (Sao Paolo, Brazil) scored for the second consecutive game and also added an assist. Sastre put Post on the board early in the second half. Nick Aglira dove on the ball on the right side of the box. Sastre fell but was able to wrestle it away from the keeper and booted from the ground to the top left corner for the score in the 50th minute.
 
Sophomore Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) hit a header from in front of the net on a cross by Sastre to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the 73rd minute. He later assisted on a goal by senior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) with a cross on the ground in front as Baccielo knocked it past the keeper. Senior Steven Vaz (Beacon Falls, Conn.) added one for good measure in the 86th minute. Vaz took a cross from freshman Jason Goja (Naugatuck, Conn.) and scored on a tough angle from the left side.
 
Senior Andre Lindsay (Clarendon, Jamaica) recorded his fifth clean sheet of the year and has allowed just two goals this season. The Eagles outshot the Tigers 17-5 in the contest.
 
Scouting the Cougars
Caldwell comes into the week with a record of 4-4 overall and 2-2 in CACC play, but has dropped its last two contests to Wilmington and Queens. The Cougars are second in the CACC with 17 goals scored, eight of them by two-time CACC Player of the Week Haakon Sulheim. Sulheim leads the conference and is fourth in the nation with eight goals.
 
All-Time Series vs. Caldwell
Post is 8-4-2 against the Cougars since 2002, but is unbeaten in the last five matchups. The Eagles defeated Caldwell 4-1 in a penalty shootout in the first round of the CACC Tournament last season.

Scouting the Wildcats
Wilmington is tied with Post atop the CACC standings at 4-1 and is 7-2 overall. The Wildcats have won four of their last five games, with the lone defeat coming at Chestnut Hill. Wilmington was ranked No. 13 in the country until a loss last week. They are currently fourth in the East Region. Elton Joe and Tom Quaranta are tied for second in the CACC with seven goals each. Joe is leads the conference with five assists and is fifth in the nation with 19 points.
 
All-Time Series vs. Wilmington
The Eagles a 6-7-2 all-time against Wilmington, but has never defeated the Wildcats on the road. Post has won the last two games including a 1-0 victory in 2012 CACC Semifinals.

Clean Sheets For Lindsay
Senior goalkeeper Andre Lindsey (Clarendon, Jamaica) has allowed just two goals this season and recorded shutouts in five of Post's victories. He leads the conference in save percentage (.905), goals against average (0.275) and shutouts (5). As of the Sept. 29 NCAA report, he is second in the nation in goal against average and third in save percentage.
 
Creating Chances
Post has outshot its opponents 99-62 this season, including an 81-32 margin in its five CACC games. The Eagles held a 17-5 advantage last time out against Holy Family. Post does most of its damage in the first half as it holds a 44-18 shot advantage in the opening period this year.
 
Defending The Prize
The Eagles have one of the top defenses in the country. They have allowed just two goals all season and are ranked second in the country in goals against average at 0.27. Post is also second in the nation with shutouts in 71% of their games, five total. The Eagles have a .905 save percentage which is also good for second in the NCAA.
 
Jumping Into The National Spotlight
The Eagles are currently ranked No. 15 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll released on Oct. 1. It marks the second time this season Post is ranked in the Top 25. The Eagles have been regionally ranked all season.

Accolades From The Conference
Two members of the Post University men's soccer team were honored by the CACC on Sept. 9. Raphael Moura was selected as Co-Player of the Week. Andre Lindsay was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week. Lindsay was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week. Francisco Sastre and Lindsay were both named to the CACC Honor Roll on Sept 30.
 
Home Sweet Home
Post is unbeaten in 23 of its last 24 home games. The Eagles are 19-1-4, have outscored opponents 53-12 and posted eight shutouts over the stretch. The lone defeat during the stretch came against Chestnut Hill on Sept. 15. Post is also unbeaten in 15 of its last 16 regular season conference games.
 
Approaching the Record Books
Senior Joe Baccielo is within striking distance of several career records. He sits at 26 goals, six behind Eurica Trowers' record of 32. Baccielo is also four back of Johan Pineda with 14 career assists and three behind Maurice Johnson with 66 points. Senior Kevin Ipina sits at 10 career assists, eight back of the record.
 
Eagles Against Nationally Ranked Opponents
Post picked up its first-ever win against a nationally ranked team on Sept. 5 in a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Southern New Hampshire. It was the third time the Eagles squared off against an NSCAA Top 25 team. Post has one more game against a nationally ranked opponent this season on Oct. 23 against No. 2 LIU-Post at home.

Bringing Home the Hardware
The Eagles won a record number of awards in 2012. Senior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) received eight regional and national honors including, CACC Player of the Year, NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Third Team All-American, and Capital One Second Team Academic All-American. Senior Kevin Ipina (Danbury, Conn.) was named NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American. Sophomore Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) received CACC Rookie of the Year and head coach Ted Haley was honored as conference coach of the year. Additionally, the team received the NSCAA Team Academic Award and placed three on the CACC All-Academic Team.
 
Tough Slate Ahead
The Eagles will play a 16-match schedule that features matchups with five of the top eight teams in the East Region in 2012 and three NCAA Tournament participants. Post opens the season on the road against Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 5. On Sept. 25, Post plays Dominican on the road in a rematch of the 2012 CACC Championship game.  LIU-Post makes its first-ever appearance at LaMoy Field on Oct. 23. The Pioneers were ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Poll after beginning the 2012 season 12-0-0.
 
Preseason Prognostications
The Post men's soccer team was tabbed to finish first in the CACC in the Preseason Poll released on Aug. 20. The Eagles received seven first-place votes and 157 points as voted on by the league's 13 head coaches.
 
On The Horizon
The Eagles are at home for two games next week against Felician on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and against Philadelphia on Sunday, Oct. 13. Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m.
