WATERBURY, Conn. – In a showdown between two teams that received votes in the United Soccer Coaches' preseason poll, Post and Adelphi University, the Eagles ousted the Panthers in the Adelphi Kickoff Tournament, 2-1.
Just 15 minutes and 5 seconds into tonight's game, Adelphi's Enrico Cesarini Sforza took the Panthers' first shot of the game off his right foot immediately following an Adelphi free kick. The ball sunk into the net of Eagles goalkeeper, Francisco Pinochet and the Panthers went up 1-0 with plenty of game left to play against a motivated Eagles team that already led the Panthers in shots taken, 4-1, at that time in the game.
Over the remainder of the first half, the Eagles, determined to equalize, continued firing away at Panthers goalie, Andrea Farinella. Farinella finished the half having faced four shots on goal with four saves. The Eagles, led by Filipe Canastra with two SOG, finished the half with seven total shots.
The second half would later come to prove the tenacity of Eagles Head Coach, Ted Haley's squad this year. In the 79th minute, Post's Marcos Rodriguez finally equalized the game after an Eagles corner kick. Haley's team would not settle for another tie in the tournament.
Four minutes later, Aidan Tross took a shot that sailed over the outstretched foot of an Adelphi defender before finally reaching its fate and finding its way to the back of the Panthers' net in what would become the game-winning goal.
Post outshot Adelphi 14-6 in the match.
The Eagles will take on the University of Charleston Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. in neutral site Millersville, Pennsylvania before returning for their home opener against Bentley University on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
