Eagles’ Comeback Falls Short In 3-2 Defeat To St. Thomas Aquinas

Dennis And Dunster Tally Goals In Post Women’s Soccer’s Second Straight Loss

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's soccer team suffered its second straight defeat to open the 2012 season on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles fell 3-2 to St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference matchup. Sophomore Tessa Dunster (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Renel Dennis (Stamford, Conn.) tallied goals for Post.
 
With Post (0-2) trailing 3-1 in the 76th minute of the match, a Spartans' defender was called for a handball in the box. On the penalty kick that ensued, Dennis notched her first goal of the season as she beat St. Thomas Aquinas' goalkeeper, Avaree Rainford, low and to the right side. Dennis' penalty kick pulled the Eagles within one, 3-2.
 
However, Post could not net the game-tying goal in the final 14:26 of the match. At the 82:59 mark, senior Sabrina Sinopoli (Watertown, Conn.) had the best chance from the right flank, but missed the shot wide.
 
After St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0) seized an early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, Dunster evened the score at 1-1 with her first goal of the season in the 24th minute. Junior goalkeeper Grace McConnell (Leeds, England) connected with Dunster on a punt. Dunster was on a breakaway from approximately midfield and finished the play.
 
The Spartans reclaimed a one-goal advantage at the 28:01 mark on a tally by Nisha Flinn off a feed from Mae Comerford was played to Flinn's feet. She finished from 10 yards and gave St. Thomas Aquinas a 2-1 lead. The margin grew to 3-1 in the 47th minute when Priya Bhatti netted her first goal of the year.
 
McConnell made five saves in the defeat.
 
Post will close out its season-opening three-game homestand on Thursday, Sept. 6, when the Eagles host Nyack at LaMoy Field. First touch is slated for 4 p.m.
