WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team fell in its home-opener to Stonehill at the Drubner Center on Saturday afternoon in four sets. The scores were 14-25, 28-26, 17-25, 15-25. Graduate student
Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) led all players with 20 kills.
Sophomore
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) recorded 36 assists on the day. Junior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) added 11 kills.
The Eagles stuck with the Skyhawks at the start of the first stanza and held a 10-8 advantage after a kill by Slyaktina. Stonehill used a 17-4 run to put the set away.
After trading points to begin the second set, a kill by Wilman capped off four unanswered points for Post as it took a 12-8 lead. The Skyhawks slowly chipped away, pulled even at 20-20, and eventually took a 23-21 lead. Two straight kills by Reynolds gave the Eagles the set.
With the third set tied 9-9, Stonehill scored five unanswered to pull ahead 14-9. The Eagles got as close as three at 18-15. Service aces by Emily Iverson and Sydney Maxey down the stretch helped the Skyhawks pull away.
Stonehill jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the final set. The Eagles responded with a 5-2 run helped out by two Skyhawk service errors, but could never get any closer.
Freshman
Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) recorded two service aces. Willman and junior
Monica Aristizabal (Tustin, Calif.) added 17 and 12 digs, respectively. The Skyhawks were tough on the net, recording eight team blocks. Meaghan Lee led the way with five block assists. Iverson led all players with 40 assists.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Molloy. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
