NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team lost its 2012 season-opener, a non-conference match at Southern Connecticut State University's Pelz Gym on Thursday night. The final scores were 16-25, 13-25, 22-25. Graduate student

In the opening set with the score even at 8-8, Southern Connecticut State (1-0) rallied off four straight points to claim a 12-8 lead and force a Post timeout. Following the stoppage,
Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ceased the run with a kill. However, the Owls scored the next five points to claim a 17-9 lead in the stanza.
Southern Connecticut jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the second set behind kills from Syriah Celestine, Jade Black and Sarah Beres. The Eagles pulled to within four at 10-6 on an Owls' service error. Southern Connecticut grew the lead to as many as 10, 18-8, after a kill by Olivia Lathrop.
Post (0-1) gained an 8-2 advantage to open the third set, including six straight points on Slyaktina's serve. But, with the score 10-8 in favor of the Eagles, Southern Connecticut State scored four points in a row to claim a lead it would not relinquish after consecutive service aces by Natasha Carlbert. The Owls grew their lead as large as six points, 20-14, following a Celestine ace.
Southern Connecticut State's Beres led all players with 12 kills in the match, and Lauren McVey added 10 kills. Morgan Carmen had a match-high 17 digs to lead the Owls' defense.
Post will host Stonehill in the Eagles' home opener on Saturday, Sept. 1. First serve at the Drubner Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
