Baccielo’s Goal Not Enough As Post Falls To UMass-Lowell 3-1 In NCAA Tournament

Eagles End Season At 13-4-5 In First Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance

LOWELL, Mass. – The Post University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at fourth-seeded UMass-Lowell on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Junior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) netted the lone goal and the Eagles' first tally their NCAA Tournament history at Cushing Field. Post ends the 2012 season with an overall record of 13-4-5.
 
After UMass-Lowell (14-5-1) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first 60 minutes of the match, Baccielo pulled Post within two in the 64th minute. He headed a cross from freshman Francisco Sastre (Sao Paulo, Brazil) past River Hawks' goalkeeper Chris Maierle to make the score 3-1.
 
Baccielo had a pair of chances to cut the deficit to one goal in the 74th and 75th minutes. At the 73:52 mark his attempt was saved by a UMass-Lowell defender and at 74:50 he hit the post on a chip shot.
 
Homero Morais gave UMass-Lowell a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, and Majid Saeed added a marker at th 40:45 mark to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead by halftime. Saeed tacked on his second tally of the match in the 61st minute.
 
For the match, shots were even at 12-12 and the two teams each had six shots on goal. UMass-Lowell had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. With the win, the River Hawks will take on #1 LIU Post in the second round.
 
With the loss, Post concludes its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. The Eagles are the two-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Regular Season champions and have appeared in the last two conference tournament finals contests.
