PREVIEW: Eagles Look To Continue Winning Ways Against Top Two Teams In CACC North

The Post University volleyball team hopes to continue its winning ways as it plays three matches this week, two against the top teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division. The Eagles travel to Caldwell on Wednesday at 7 p.m. They return home against Dominican on Friday at 7 p.m. and Georgian Court on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Caldwell is currently riding a seven-match winning streak and sits in second in the CACC North 9-2 record in conference games and 16-9 overall. The Cougars defeated Post on Oct. 3, 3-2. Susan McDonough leads the CACC with 264 kills. Caldwell leads the conference in kills (1121), assists (1045), and digs (1756).
 
Dominican is 12-0 in CACC play this season and 16-7 overall. The Chargers have won their last 10 matches, including a 3-1 victory over Post on Sept. 25. Setter Amanda Hallstein leads the CACC with 10.50 assists per set. Dominican is third in the conference in service aces with 155 on the season.
 
Georgian Court sits at 10-12 overall and is tied for third in the CACC South at 7-5. The Lions have won four of their last six contests. Jaslene Lopez is fifth in the conference with 0.50 service aces per set. Georgian Court is third in the CACC with 53 solo blocks.

Sophomore Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) tied her season-high with six service aces and also recorded 36 assists. Senior Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) and graduate student Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) each added 11 kills. Graduate student Vanessa Ramos (Milford, Conn.) chipped in 15 digs.
 
Post fell behind early in the first set as Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 7-4 advantage. Slyaktina recorded a kill to cap a 4-1 Eagles run and tie the score 8-8. With the set tied 19-19 late, Post scored the final six points to win the set. Reynolds had seven kills in the first.
 
With Chestnut Hill holding a 4-1 advantage, Slyaktina launched three consecutive service aces to tie the final set 4-4. The teams traded points, but a late 5-1 run by the Griffins put them ahead 16-12 and forced an Eagles timeout. Out of the break, Post pulled away with a 9-2 run.

REYNOLD RECEIVES HONORABLE MENTION:
Kelli Reynolds received an Honorable Mention from the CACC in the Oct. 9 release. Reynolds posted 19 kills while hitting .459 overall and adding a pair of blocks in the Eagles 3-2 defeat at the hands of Caldwell on Oct. 3. She leads Post with 133 kills on the season and is second with six solo blocks and 18 block assists. This marks the second time Reynolds has received the honor in her career, with the first coming on Oct. 17, 2011.
 
1,000 DIGS FOR THE CAPTAIN:
Senior captain Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) recorded 11 digs at Franklin Pierce on Sept. 15 to give her 1,000 for her career. Hayes became the seventh student-athlete in Post history to reach the 1,000-dig milestone. 
 
EAGLES AMONG LEADERS:
Julia Slyaktina leads the CACC and is 11th in NCAA Division II with 0.65 service aces per set. Slyaktina is seventh in the conference with 494 assists. Kelli Reynolds is fifth with a .271 hitting percentage. The Eagles as a team are third in the CACC and 35th in NCAA Division II with 1.89 service aces per set. They are fourth in the league with a .169 hitting percentage.
 
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS:
Post was selected to finish fourth in the CACC North Division in the Aug. 24 poll. The Eagles garnered 55 votes. Caldwell was picked first in the North with 95 votes, while Holy Family was chosen first in the South with 94 votes. Each received 11 first-place nods.
 
BRIENZA NAMES HIS CAPTAIN:
Sixth-year head coach Michael Brienza named senior Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) the 2012 team captain. Last season, she ranked second on the team in digs with 256, and was the team leader in digs during the 2010 season with 303.
