PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA (November 5, 2011) Nyack defeated the Eagles 1-0 in the first overtime of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Saturday afternoon just outside Philadelphia. The winning goal came at 97:11 on a corner kick.
“We had some unbelievable chances to score, but missed narrowly and their keeper made good saves,” said
Ted Haley, Eagles Head Coach. “When it gets to overtime on set pieces it can go either way. The boys played well, but we are disappointed that we didn't finish what we started.”
The first half was quiet for both teams with Post controlling play for most of the half.
The intensity picked up in the second half of championship play, with the Eagles attacking late in the game. With 25 minutes to play the first opportunity came when
Francis Eno and
Gustavo Ferreira fired a pair of shots right in front of the Nyack goal that were shuffled aside by the Warrior defense.
Minutes later,
Joe Baccielo sent a cross in for Eno that was broken up by Nyack keeper Adrian Ibanez.
With just over 17 minutes to play in regulation,
Byron Garcia took possession of the ball at midfield and sprinted up the left sideline. Garcia slipped a pass back to Baccielo who sent a cross in for Ferreira who shot it two feet wide.
Post kept up the intensity as Nyack had a few chances late in the half as well with Eagle keeper
Errol Reid making a tremendous save.
Back the other direction at the 10:30 mark
Peter Cleary positioned himself straight on sending a header right towards Ibanez who came up with the stop.
With five minutes remaining, Ferreira found Eno who blasted a shot from point blank range as Ibanez came up with a dazzling save.
With the clock winding down in regulation, Cleary took the ball at midfield and sent it ahead to Baccielo who sent a cross in for Eno, but it was behind the play sending the game into extra minutes.
Post would have one final chance to score and it would come with Eno in overtime. Just 1:30 into the extra stanza, Eno on a one on one beat his defender and slipped a shot wide left.
The game winning goal came on a corner kick for Nyack at the 97:11 mark as Jack Hacking scored on a scrum in front of the goal.
Reid was stellar in goal throughout the day for the Eagles with five saves.
Hylton Davis was critical in the back field in keeping a clean sheet through 90 minutes.
Davis, Garcia, and Korab Mauremi were all named to the CACC All-Tournament team.
The Eagles now stand at a 11-4-4 record.
