Post University Slated to Add Flag Football as Latest Sport Offering Starting in Spring 2026

WATERBURY, Conn. -- As Post Athletics quickly moves into the Spring 2025 season, excitement is already building for Spring 2026 with the announcement that Post University will be adding Women's Flag Football as their newest varsity sport, bringing the institution's sports offerings up to 18 while also including two Co-Ed Sports in Cheerleading and ESports.

Joining nearly 70 NCAA institutions that already sponsor it, Post University is slated to join the emerging 7-on-7 sport which has picked up steam across the collegiate ranks in recent years. Nearly three weeks ago, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics made a recommendation that Division I, II, and III sponsor legislation to add Women's Flag Football to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women Program.

Similar to Football, the 7-on-7 sport is played on a field that spans 40 yards in width and 80 yards in length with each team looking to move the ball down the field to score. The big differences come in a "tackle" occurring when the defender pulls the flags from the offensive ball carrier's belt and where the offensive team must reach to gain a new set of downs.

As it stands, there are five sports that are part of the Emerging Sports for Women program including acrobatics and tumbling, equestrian at the Division I and II levels, Rugby, Stunt, and Triathlon. Post will be one of several schools adding Flag Football in 2026, a sport that has gained popularity at the high school level and will be part of the 2028 Olympics being held in Los Angeles.

In order for a sport to be considered for championship status by the NCAA, there must be at least 40 schools sponsoring it at the varsity level and meet minimum contest and participation requirements.

For Post, they are still in the process of looking for a conference to join immediately for the 2026 campaign and are currently in search of the first-ever Women's Flag Football part-time Head Coach, a position that is available to apply for here
