PREVIEW: Eagles Search For First Win With Two Games This Week

Post Looks To Avenge Season-Opening Loss To Bridgeport On Friday

The Post University women's lacrosse team looks for its first win of the season with two games this week. The Eagles host American International on Wednesday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m. Post travels for its second match of the season against Bridgeport on Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m.

Despite going out to an early 3-0 lead, the Eagles fell in their season-opener to in-state rival Bridgeport. Sophomore Miranda Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) led the Eagles with four goals on the day.
 
The Eagles started the scoring early as senior Morgan Kanavy (Syracuse, N.Y.) found the back of the net at the 26:28 mark of the first. Polaski scored minutes later to put Post ahead 2-0 with 23:18 remaining in the half. Three Bridgeport goals within a 34 second span put them ahead 4-3 with 4:12 remaining in the half and forced a timeout by the Eagles. The Purple Knights tacked on two more before the break.
 
Junior Meghan Diggett (East Islip, N.Y.) closed the deficit to 6-4 early in the second half with a goal at 23:03. Bridgeport opened the score up to 8-4 with goals by Shealyn Scully and Gabrielle Valela. Polaski scored two more goals in the final 4:32.
 
Scouting The Yellow Jackets
American International comes into Wednesday's contest at a record of 0-3, most recently falling to St. Thomas Aquinas 11-8 at home on March 9. The Yellow Jackets will be playing their first road game of the season. Brittany Flynn and Kristen Angeletti lead the team with four goals each. Stefanie Dufesne has team-highs in groundballs (10) and caused turnovers (7). American International was selected to finish 12th in the Northeast-10 Preseason Poll.

The Eagles have never defeated the Yellow Jackets in two previous meetings. Last season was the first time in Post's program history the two didn't play.

Scouting The Purple Knights
Bridgeport won its first two games of the season before falling to Southern New Hampshire 16-5 last time out. Gabrielle Valela leads the Purple Knights with 11 goals on the year. Emily Catalano has grabbed a team-high 10 groundballs. Bridgeport is first in the East Coast Conference with 19 shots per game.

Post is 1-2 against the Purple Knights in program history. The Eagles have never played Bridgeport away from LaMoy Field.

Campbell Tabbed As Head Coach
Laura Campbell was announced as the second head women's lacrosse coach in program history on Nov. 13. Campbell returns to her home state with four years of Division I head coaching experience at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and most recently American University in Washington D.C. During her two seasons at American, she amassed 16 wins at her alma mater. Additionally, she mentored seven All-Patriot League selections en route to the conference semifinals each year. Following the 2011 and 2012 seasons the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) lauded the Eagles as they maintained the highest team grade-point average among all Division I institutions.
 
Preseason Prognostications:
The Eagles were picked to finish third in the CACC North Division as voted on by the eight conference coaches on Feb. 25. Post received seven points in the poll. Georgian Court garnered 15 points, the most of any team, and three first-place votes and was selected first in the North Division. Defending CACC Champion, Holy Family, grabbed the top spot in the South Division with 13 points and three first-place votes.
 
Eagles Take Plunge To Support Special Olympics
The Post University women's lacrosse team participated in the Penguin Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Eagles braved the frigid waters of Crystal Lake in Middletown, Conn. to raise $1,400 for Special Olympics Connecticut. The event had 248 participants and raised over $55,000 for Special Olympics Connecticut's year-round programs of sports training and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities.
