WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's lacrosse team continues its season on Wednesday, March 14, as they travel to take on in-state rival Southern Connecticut State for the first time in program history. Opening draw is slated for 4 p.m. The Eagles are back at home for their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday, March 17, at noon against Wilmington.
Post is coming off a week of highs and lows. On March 9, the Eagles had the best statistical game in their history, defeating St. Joseph 19-9. The 19 goals were an all-time high for the squad and the nine goal allowed were an all-time low. Senior
Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, Conn.) tied an Eagles record with seven scores.
The next game was a different story as Post fell to Philadelphia 24-3. Sophomore
Meghan Diggett (East Islip, N.Y.), freshman
Alanna Bauche (Calgary, Alberta), and junior
Morgan Kanavy (Syracuse, N.Y.) provided the offense in defeat.
SERIES HISTORY:
The Eagles have yet to face Southern Connecticut in the history of the program. Post has been unable to defeat Wilmington in any of the four meetings between the two sqauds. Their most recent matchup was a 19-4 loss in Wilmington on April 16, 2011.
SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT OWLS:
The Owls are currently 0-2 on the season with their most recent loss coming in a 16-10 defeat at the hands of Bridgeport. Elaina Heiple provides the offense with five goals on the season. Goalie Lynette Martinez is 11
th in the country with 11.0 saves per game.
WILMINGTON WILDCATS:
Wilmington is 2-1 on the season after losing a close 17-15 game to Millersville on March 13. Liz Case and Meggan Apgar have scored 10 and nine goals respectively. Before the loss, the Wildcats had the nation's highest scoring margin, outscoring opponents by an average 16.5 goals per contest.
TAKING A LOOK AT THE NATIONAL RANKINGS:
Post University has three players ranked in the top-25 in NCAA Division II in various statistical categories.
Mallorie Michalak is eighth in the nation in ground balls per game with 4.67.
Miranda Polaski averages five draw controls per contest, good for 11
th in the NCAA. Polaski is also 25
th in assists per game at 1.67 per contest. As a team, the Eagles rank 20
th with 13.67 draw controls per game.
LOTS OF LAMOY AHEAD:
Post University will play a record eight home games during its third season of varsity competition. The field was completed in October, and the first competition to be hosted by Post was a men's soccer game against Concordia on Oct. 13, a 5-3 victory for the Eagles.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS:
The Eagles, under head coach
Jill Kowalik, were picked to finish seventh in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. Philadelphia was picked to win the conference and garnered four first place votes.
THE ROAD AHEAD:
Post will be back in action with three CACC contests next week. The Eagles host Dominican on Tuesday, March 20, and travel to Holy Family on Thursday, March 22, opening draw for both games is at 4 p.m. They return to LaMoy on Saturday, March 24, against Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m.
