WATERBURY, Conn. -- Ahead of its doubleheader today against Bloomfield College, graduate catcher
Isaiah Velazco from Post University Baseball was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Player of the Week, as announced by the organization on Friday morning.
Velazco was near-perfect this week for Post as the Eagles went 3-1 with wins over Holy Family University and the University of Bridgeport. Working his way to a .692 batting average, Velazco was 9-for-13 with six RBIs, four runs scored, three stolen bases, three walks, two doubles, and a triple. The senior did most of his work in Sunday's doubleheader sweep of the Purple Knights after going a perfect 7-for-7 with four RBIs, two stolen bases, two runs scored, a double, triple, and a walk as the Eagles won 11-6 and 2-0.
The graduate student becomes the first position player since 2023 to be named the East Region Player of the Week when Matt Goehrig earned the honor once that season. Last season, current graduate right-hander
Matt Semon was named the East Region Pitcher of the Week, becoming only the third pitcher in program history to receive the weekly regional award for Post. In addition to Goehrig, Velazco joins Don Walsh as the only other position player to be NCBWA East Region Player of the Week, making him only the third all-time to do it, while being the sixth player all-time when including pitchers as well.

Post University takes the field today and Saturday at Municipal Stadium against Bloomfield College, with both doubleheaders set to start at 12:00 PM each day. The two teams have not met since the 2023 season, when the Eagles took two out of the three games they played against the Bears.
