WATERBURY, Conn. -- Junior goalie
Hannah Saunders has been named to the Watch List for the Women's Hockey Commissioners Association Goalie of the Year award as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon, marking the first time a goalie from Post University Women's Ice Hockey has been put on the watch list in program history.
Saunders is one of 33 goaltenders from across the AHA, ECAC, Hockey East, NEWHA, and WCHA to be put on the list and one of five goalies from the conference to be in the running for the nationwide award which will be announced in March during the NCAA Frozen Four. This initial "Watch List" of outstanding goalies is comprised of those with a goals against average of 2.10 or lower or a save percentage of .920 or higher. A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, and media will work through the list over the next two weeks ahead of the announcement in two months.
So far this season, Saunders has manufactured a 2.09 goals against average in 17 starts for the Eagles while holding a .938 save percentage across 1,007:15 minutes of playing time. The junior has allowed just 35 goals this year while making 529 saves to lead Post to a 4-10-3 record in her starts and recording three shutouts. In her career, Saunders now has six shutouts which is a program record and with her three shutouts this season, she is now the single-season leader for shutouts in the history of the program.Â
The Eagles will take on Franklin Pierce University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM down at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Connecticut for the final time this season after going 1-2-0 in their first three games of the season against the Ravens.Â
