WORCESTER, Mass. – Post University Women's Ice Hockey is not done yet, as two goals would be enough to get the job done on Saturday afternoon against second-seed Assumption University in Game Two of the NEWHA Tournament Quarterfinals in Worcester, Massachusetts. Using goals from freshman forward
Kai Hyatt and sophomore defenseman
Caryss Kehl, the seventh-seeded Eagles staved off a late push by the Greyhounds to force a decisive Game Three on Sunday night at 7:00 PM to decide who will move on to the NEWHA Semifinals.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, Assumption University 1
Post University (11-24-1)
Assumption University (18-15-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Like yesterday's affair, it would start out the same way with the Eagles getting on the board first, this time with the second goal of the season from Hyatt. Like with freshman forward
Georgia Stevens' goal as well on Friday, it would come around the midway point of the frame, this time with the help of junior forward
Noa Farberman and freshman defenseman Tallullah Cameron against junior goalie Jadyn Weiser.
From there, both Weiser and senior goalie
Hannah Saunders would hold their own, with Saunders making four saves during the lone Assumption power play of the first. At the end of one, the senior was a perfect 12-for-12 in net after making 50 saves yesterday, while Weiser also tallied 12 saves, allowing the one goal to Hyatt. After facing those 12 shots in the first, Weiser would only face 13 total over the final two periods, allowing what would end up being the game-deciding goal to Kehl in the second.
With just over 11 minutes left, and with Farberman's second assist on the day, Kehl upped the Post lead to two goals with her fourth goal of the season, giving her 14 points overall on the year offensively. That score would be met by Assumption's lone goal of the game from junior defenseman Justina Valentini, only 57 seconds later against Saunders, who recovered from that to close with 36 total saves in the 2-1 victory.
A big difference in the win for the Eagles today came in the form of staying out of the penalty box. After drawing six penalties in yesterday's 2-1 overtime loss, the Eagles drew just two penalties, both coming in the first two periods, which were quelled, while the Greyhounds committed just one penalty in the third, in which Weiser, who closed with 24 saves overall, made two saves during that two-minute man-up chance.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Noa Farberman finished with two assists, recording her third multi-point game of the season and first two-assist game of her career in the win
- The game-winning goal for Caryss Kehl was the first of that nature for her this season after having three game-winning goals over the course of last year for Post University
- On the road against Assumption University, this is the first time since a 2-0 win during the 2024-25 season in which Post University has defeated the Greyhounds away from home -- The Eagles were 0-2-1 in the three games since that victory heading into today
- Post University has won each of its last three Game Two affairs in the NEWHA Quarterfinals over the last three seasons, and are 3-1-0 during that stretch in elimination scenarios
