Softball Walks Off With Game Two Win In Split With Assumption

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Waterbury, CT - The Post University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Assumption on Friday. The Eagles won game two in walkoff fashion, 10-9 after dropping game one, 9-6.

In the game two win, the Eagles rallied from a three-run deficit to take the split. 

Post jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as the first three batters reached base, getting their first run on an RBI single by Allyson Wallauer. Lily Tomasiello followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it a 3-0 game.

The two teams would exchange three runs over the next two innings, as Post took a 6-3 lead the third inning. In the second inning, An error off the bat by Leyri Rivera scored Brianna Hynds, giving Post a 4-2 lead.

An RBI groundout by MacKenzie Bruggeman of Assumption cut Post's lead to 4-3, but the Eagles answered with two in the bottom of the inning as Tomasiello hit a two-run homer with no outs in the inning after Wallauer led with a double to begin the inning.

The Greyhounds vaulted to a 9-6 lead after scoring six runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Jordan Dwyer and Summer Sheerin.

A single by Rivera, followed by a double to Courtney Brobst and a walk to Wallauer loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Juliana Rigano walked to drive in Rivera, and Caitlin DeAngelis was hit by a pitch, making it a 9-8 game.

Rivera would come up big again in the bottom of the fifth, hitting an RBI double to score Samantha Riccardulli, who hit a pinch hit single to lead off the inning.

Both teams were unable to get a run across in the sixth as both teams left runners on second and third, setting the stage for a dramatic seventh. Jenny Riquelme allowed just one hit in the seventh, leaving a runner stranded on third. In the bottom of the inning, Rivera led off with a single and advanced on an error to second base. Back to back walks to Brobst and Wallauer loaded the bases, and Tomasiello hit a deep fly ball to right, scoring Rivera and giving the Eagles the win.

Tomasiello finished 1-for-4 with a run and four RBI. SHe now has 20 RBI over her last six games. Rigano was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Rivera was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. It was the eighth multi-hit game for Rivera this season.

In game one, Assumption scored two runs in both  the first and second innings, including a double by Heather Junjulas that drove in a run in the first and triple from Lauren Geremia who would score on an error on the play while also driving in a run, making it a 4-1 game, as the Eagles scored one in the first on an RBI single from DeAngelis. DeAngelis drove in her second run of the game on her second RBI single of the game, scoring Riccardulli, who singled to open the inning.

The Greyhounds extended its lead to 7-2 in the top of the dourth, including a two-run homer by Dwyer and scored two in the sixth, making it a 9-3 game.

Post attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Brobst walked and Wallauer singled to put runners on first and second, setting Tomasiello up for her third homer of the season, making it a 9-6 game. However, the Eagles were unable to get another baserunner the rest of the way.

Tomasiello was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. DeAngelis was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Wallauer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Dwyer was 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs for Assumption.

Up next, the Eagles host Holy Family in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Sunday, April 2, beginning at 1 p.m.
