Softball Swept in Pair of Shutouts to End Regular Season, Will Face Caldwell in Best-of-Three Matchup This Weekend

WATERBURY, Conn. – With two games remaining in the regular season, Post University Softball looked to make a small push up the conference standings heading into this weekend's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, starting on Saturday. However, a pair of shutout losses for the Eagles at the hands of Felician University, 10-0 in five innings, and 3-0, would sink Post into the eighth seed for the best-of-three series.

The Eagles will now have to travel to face top-seeded Caldwell University for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:30 PM, in which if both teams split, there will be a game three on Sunday at noon.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Felician University 10 (5 Innings)

Post University 0, Felician University 3

Post University (10-31, 7-11 CACC)

Felician University (23-21, 14-4 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 0, Felician University 10 (5 Innings)
Ten runs in two innings would lead Felician to the five-inning mercy rule win, as they tagged sophomore right-hander Meghan McGurk for nine of those ten runs, while junior right-hander Allysa Calabrese was responsible for the other. Of those ten runs, four would be unearned as the Post defense committed three errors, matching their hit total against senior pitcher Jocelyn Moody.

Moody picked up her 13th win of the season in the circle for the Golden Falcons, throwing a five-inning shutout in which she allowed just three hits with two strikeouts on 66 pitches. The only runner to reach scoring position for Post was sophomore infielder Alexandra Bisceglia to start the game when her single led to her reaching third via an error by senior outfielder Hannah Ramirez.

Senior outfielder Mikayla Brown delivered the big blow for the Felician offense with her three-run home run off McGurk, which led to the pitching change in the fourth. Brown, along with the other top two hitters in the lineup, combined to go 5-for-9 with five RBIs and six runs scored. Junior infielder Sara Torres was the only other player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third.

Game 2: Post University 0, Felician University 3
After shutting down Felician in the fourth inning without allowing a hit, graduate right-hander Katelyn Lipsky would run into some trouble with one out, walking and hitting a batter in back-to-back at-bats to put runners on first and second. Senior infielder Kailey Alas would drive in the game's first run with her RBI fielder's choice before the first hit of the game by the Golden Falcons, off the bat of freshman infielder Kelsey Vitalis, made it a 2-0 affair.

That would end up being all the offense the home team would need, tacking on another for good measure in the sixth via another RBI single from Vitalis to sweep the doubleheader in shutout fashion with a 3-0 win. For Lipsky, she would finish the game allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts, sitting now at 7-13 on the year.

It was a combo effort from Felician's pitching staff that got the job done, starting with sophomore pitcher Skye Limardo. Limardo threw the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout before senior pitcher Mallory Shevlin came in to finish the job. Shevlin's final line would see her go 3 1/3 innings as well while allowing one hit, having a strikeout and a walk. Junior pitcher Jazel Lopez would get the final out and pick up the save in the 3-0 win after allowing the tying run in Tompkins to come to the plate, who she would retire via fly out.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Heading into the postseason, Angelica Tompkins sits at a .407 batting average in 39 games played – The all-time Division II record for a single season at Post University is currently .413 by Allyson Wallauer in 2023, while the top three batting averages for a single season all were when the institution was part of the NAIA
  • Failing to reach base safely in game one, both Tatiana Martinez and Haley DiBona had their season-high six-game on-base streaks snapped
  • Post University was shut out in a doubleheader sweep for the first time since last season against Jefferson University on April 17th, 2025, by 8-0 and 12-0 finals
  • Having been swept in the doubleheader, Post University has lost six consecutive games to Felician University, which is the longest losing streak in the all-time series between the two teams

WHO'S NEXT
With the pair of losses, Post University will officially enter the CACC Tournament as the eighth seed and will head to Caldwell, New Jersey, to take on top-seeded Caldwell University on Saturday in the best-of-three series. Saturday will feature a doubleheader starting at 1:30 PM, and should the teams split, they will play again on Sunday at noon. The Eagles have lost nine consecutive games to the Cougars dating back to the 2022 season.
