WATERBURY, Conn. -- The first-ever quarterback for Post University Football once they officially became an NCAA Division II program last season in graduate student
Broghean McGovern is headed overseas. One year removed from his grad season with the Eagles, McGovern signed on with the Ravensburg Razorbacks of the German Football League earlier this week.
Before coming to Post, McGovern spent four seasons at Bryant University, appearing at the QB position three times during the 2018-19 season in which he was 18-for-35 passing with 201 yards and two interceptions, rushed for eight yards on eight carries with two touchdowns, and caught one six-yard touchdown pass. McGovern would go on to appear in five games the next season, but rather than slinging the rock, he would grab three passes for 31 yards before not appearing in any games during the 2020-21 season.
Enter McGovern at Post University who last season (2022), officially joined the Division II ranks for Football after years of participating in Sprint Football. In 10 games last season, the Haverhill, Massachusetts native completed 149 of 304 pass attempts with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. With his legs, he would tack on four more touchdowns with 104 yards on 118 carries, attempted 53 punts with a total of 2,026 yards, and had one kickoff that traveled 64 yards in the air. McGovern would even get involved on the defensive end just a little bit where he would have three solo tackles in 10 games played.
The best game of McGovern's time as Post would be in their first-ever game as a Division II program in which he threw for a program record 416 yards and five touchdown passes in a 35-34 loss at Municipal Stadium to Lock Haven. As it stands, McGovern holds numerous records for the Post University Football program which just finished its second season competing at the Division II level and won their first game in program history at Franklin Pierce University this season.
McGovern currently holds single-game records for longest pass reception which he threw 74 yards to
Taji Blizzard against Southern Connecticut, most pass attempts (42), most pass completions (26), most passing yards (416), touchdown passes thrown (5), most rushing attempts (18), most rushing touchdowns (2), and most punts (8). He also holds the season records for most touchdown passes (14), passing yards (1,918), pass attempts (304), pass completions (149), highest completion percentage (49.01%), punting yards (2,026), and punt attempts (53). As a result of this, McGovern also tops the career record books in all those categories as well.
This past season, the Razorbacks finished 2-10-0 in the GFL1 and as a result of the last-place finish were relegated to GFL 2 for the upcoming season. Of their 10 losses, only four of them were by one possession while their two wins came in the form of a 26-15 win over the Munich Cowboys and 26-21 victory over the Marburg Mercenaries. The team will also see former Head Coach John Gilligan return to the team after spending time with Ravensburg from 2016-2018. According to the Razorbacks' press release about McGovern, the organization was in search of a new quarterback following the departure of Alexander Kronborg Bjerre back to Denmark with three games left in the season. The 2024 GFL season kicks off in June for the Ravensburg Razorbacks.
