Waterbury, CT – Post University men's soccer player
Antoine Trifonov was named to the 2022 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Men's Soccer All-East Region First Team, while
Sergio Sanchez and
Stephen Sprowson were named to the second team.
Trifonov, the current Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Defensive Player of the Year and All-CACC First Team member was the defensive catalyst for the Eagles this year. Trifonov anchored a back line that has allowed just 13 goals this season in 21 games en route to a CACC regular season and tournament championship. The Eagles had 12 shutouts on the season, including an NCAA Super Region 1 win over previously unbeaten Mercyhurst (19-0-1 at the time), 2-0 and not allowing a shot on net. Trifonov has been a part of three CACC Conference Championship tournament titles and was named to the CACC All-Tournament team after Post's 3-1 win over Alliance University in the title game. Trifonov also had a goal on the season – the game-winner - in a 2-0 win over Holy Family this season.
Sprowson was Trifonov's right-hand man on the historic backline and was a main driving force in thwarting the opposing team's offense. Sprowson – who was also named to the CACC First Team – had a goal and an assist on the season and started 12 of the Eagles' 21 games this season.
For Sanchez, the four-time CACC Champion, it was the second straight season making the All-East Region team after making the All-CACC First Team for the second straight season earlier. The captain – who is the catalyst for the Eagles' offensive attack – had three goals this season, including one in both the CACC Quarterfinal win over Caldwell and one in the CACC Semifinals against Wilmington off of a free kick that began the two-goal comeback for Post. He was named to the CACC All-Tournament team and was named tournament MVP. For his career, Sanchez has 15 goals and ten assists (40 points). Sanchez has appeared in the most NCAA Tournament games in school history (7).
It's the third consecutive season the Eagles have had multiple players make the All-East Region team. In 2021, the Eagles had four members make the team, including Sanchez,
Alvaro Sanchez,
Andrea Baleotto and
Sergio Diaz.
Post continues its season on Thursday in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament against No. 2 Charleston on the campus of Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
