WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's soccer team opens its 2015 schedule this weekend at the Merrimack Kickoff Classic in North Andover, Mass. The Eagles will face-off against Bentley in their opener in Friday at 4 p.m. and then play the hosts #15 Merrimack, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Season RecapPost capped off last season with a 2-0 victory over Salem International to capture the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. The Eagles finished the year with a 10-8 record, winning six of their last seven games and outscoring opponents 17-5 down the stretch. Post was once again stellar at home with a 7-1 record at LaMoy.
ReturnersThe Eagles return a majority of their roster from a year ago including the top three scorers; seniors
Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.),
Gustavo Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and
Tiago Martins (Lamas de Olo, Portugal). Post also welcomes back two key contributors from injury in senior
Francisco Sastre (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and sophomore
Armando Filho (Cataguases, Brazil). Four of the top five scorers return led by Moura who had 10 goals in 2014.
Scouting the OppositionBentley was 6-10-1 last year and fell to Post 3-0 in their meeting at LaMoy Field. The Falcons' leading scorer Scott Levy returns. Levy had six goals a year ago and was named Third Team All-Northeast 10. Merrimack posted one the best seasons in their history going 15-5-2 and advancing to the NCAA East Regional Final before bowing out against LIU-Post. The Warriors return their top four scorers from a year ago.
Preseason PollPost was selected to finish fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Preseason Poll. The Eagles received 128 points and one first-place vote from the leagues' 13 head coaches.
Approaching a MilestoneHead coach
Ted Haley comes into the season with a career record of 99-71-24. He will look to become the first coach in Post's NCAA era to win 100 games. During his tenure, Post has been one of the premier soccer programs in the East Region. Haley has led the Eagles to five CACC Championship games, an ECAC Championship, and two NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Haley has been named CACC Coach of the Year three times and NSCAA East Region Coach of the Year in 2013.
