Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University baseball team will close out its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season with its toughest matchup as it takes on first-place Wilmington at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday at noon.
The Eagles are currently sitting in third place at 18-15 overall and 13-5 in the CACC. Wilmington has been nothing short of spectacular this season, putting together a 30-9 overall record, and more impressively an 18-0 record in the CACC.
If the Eagles were to sweep the Wildcats, Post would leapfrog Chestnut Hill in the standings and receive the No. 2. seed. The No. 2 seed would get a bye in the first round of the CACC tournament.
A Look Back
Post is coming off of a doubleheader split with Chestnut Hill on April 25. In game one, they lost, 7-0 behind a great pitching performance by Dominic Raia, who threw a complete game one hitter. Junior Jeff Thoburn (Saint-Lazare, Quebec) got the lone hit for the Eagles.
In game two, an RBI triple by senior Dylan Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) and a sac fly by junior Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) in the top of the 11th inning lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 win over the Griffins.
Top Ten
Grad student Mike Costello (Manassas, Va.) has been one of the top pitchers in the CACC this season and currently sits high up in some key statistical categories. He is fourth in strikeouts with 60. He is also fourth in ERA at 2.36 and tied for fourth in wins with four. Grad student Zach Batchelor (Monroe Township, N.J.) is ninth in ERA at 2.36.
Offensively, freshman Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) is tied for seventh in home runs with three. Freshman Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) is seventh in triples with three along with Pastor.
Running Wild
The Wildcats have dominated their opponents in every aspect this season. They have outscored all opponents 295-148 this season and have outscored CACC opponents, 177-49. They are currently ranked fourth in the NCAA East Region.
Josh Swirchak leads the CACC in batting average at .426 and in on-base percentage at .524. He is second in slugging percentage at .607, hits (52) and runs (43). Sam Goines is second in batting average at .420 and in on-base percentage at .517.
On the mound, Jamie Treml lead the CACC in ERA at a stingy 0.88 and second in wins with six. Frank Samluk is sixth in strikeouts with 54.
Head-To-Head
The Eagles are 5-32 all-time against the Wildcats, including two losses last season to Wilmington, 6-0 and 6-3.
