PREVIEW: Men’s Soccer In Action Twice This Week

Eagles Look To Stay On Track In CACC Play

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's soccer team plays two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matches this week. The Eagles open up at home on Wednesday against Dominican at 3 p.m. and visit Holy Family on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Post is 2-3 overall and 1-2 in CACC play this year.
 
Last Time Out: Post 5, Goldey-Beacom 1 – Recap | Box Score
Post picked up its first CACC victory of the year on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win over Goldey-Beacom at Municipal Stadium. The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half on goals by Henry Ipina (Danbury, Conn.), Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) and Mamadou Balde (Conarky, Guniea).
 
The Lightning cut the deficit to 3-1 midway through the second half as Luis Ristow beat the Eagles' keeper. Post put the game away with two late goals in the final 10 minutes by Gustavo Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Jason Goja (Aveiro, Portugal). The Eagles outshot Goldey-Beacom 14-11 on the day.
 
Scouting the Chargers
Dominican enters the week at 2-3 overall and 1-2 in CACC play but fell its last time out 1-0 to Caldwell. The Chargers have yet to win a game on the road this season. Mark Grant leads a trio of Chargers with a goal on the year. Grant also leads the team with 14 shots, including seven on target.
 
All-Time Series vs. Dominican
Post is 3-10-1 against Dominican in 14 previous meetings, but has won two of the last three times out. The two last played at LaMoy Field in the 2012 CACC Championship in which the Chargers defeated the Eagles 3-2 on penalty kicks to take the title.

Scouting the Tigers
Holy Family is 1-3-3 on the season and 0-2-2 in CACC games. Last time out the Tigers fell 2-1 at home against Bloomfield. Holy Family is led by senior Keith Crews with two goals and 12 shots. Goalkeeper Richard Ongaro is 15th in Division II with 33 saves on the year.

Post is 8-7-1 against the Tigers overall but has come out on top in each of the last four meetings, including three shutout victories. The Eagles lone road victory against Holy Family came in 2012.

Post was 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents last season. This year the Eagles will play two schools that were ranked in the NSCAA Preseason Top 25 in #1 Southern New Hampshire and #8 LIU-Post.

Post is in the top 15 in Division II in scoring offense (14th – 2.8 goals per game) and points per game (15th – 7.8). Junior Francisco Sastre (Sao Paolo, Brazil) is second in the nation with 1.0 assists per game and fifth with five total assists. Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) is tied for second in the CACC with four goals this year. As a team, Post is third with 14 goals and 11 assists.
 
Home Sweet Home
Since LaMoy Field reopened midway through the 2011 season, the Eagles have been stellar at home. In 25 matches on the turf, Post has amassed a 21-1-3 record and has won seven straight. Since the first game there on Oct. 13, 2011, the Eagles outscored their opponents 65-20 at home.
 
Preseason Prognostications
The Post men's soccer team was tabbed to finish first in the CACC in the Preseason Poll for the third consecutive year. The Eagles received five first-place votes and 153 points as voted on by the league's 13 head coaches.
 
On The Horizon
The Eagles return home for two games next week. Post host Caldwell on Oct. 1 at LaMoy Field and Wilmington on Oct. 4 at Municipal Stadium.
