PREVIEW: Softball Set to Square off with Dominican in CACC Tournament

Third-Seeded Eagles Attempt to Make Tourney Run after Historic Season

WATERBURY, Conn. – The third-seeded Post University softball team will play sixth-seeded Dominican in the opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Friday, May 2 at noon at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. If Post wins, then the Eagles will play the winner of No. 2 Georgian Court vs. No. 7 Philadelphia at 2 p.m. on Friday. If Dominican wins, then Post will play the loser of that game at 4 p.m.

Senior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored three runs, drew three walks and stole her 11th base of the season on the day. Fellow senior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had three hits in total, walked three times and scored twice.
 
Freshman Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked up four strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched in game two and had a pair of hits at the plate between the two games. Post ended the season at 18-8 in the CACC, the team's best-ever final record in the conference.
 
Scouting the Chargers:
Dominican ended up with an 18-25 record overall and finished sixth in the CACC with a 15-11 conference record. The Chargers lost three of their final four games and were swept by New Haven the last time out. Dominican is 2-6 this year in games played at neutral site fields.
 
Dominican's Kimberly Ragazzo and Elontay Collins were named All-CACC First Team, while Shannon Haukap made Second Team. Ragazzo has a .360 batting average with five homers and 31 RBI while also posting a 9-8 record on the mound with a 3.87 ERA. Collins scored 26 runs and hit 11 doubles this season, and Haukap led the CACC with seven triples while hitting .310 at the plate.
 
All-Time Series…:
With Dominican: Post has ultimately struggled against Dominican and has a 10-21 all-time record against the Chargers. The Eagles and Chargers have met in the CACC Tournament five times with Post coming away victorious only once. Post split with Dominican earlier in the season at LaMoy Field, marking its first win over the Chargers since 2011.

Eagles among Leaders:
Head coach Tracey Garofalo was recently named the 2014 CACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to a 22-20 record. Jackie Bonamassa also landed on the All-Conference First Team. She drew the most walks (27) in the conference, tied for eighth with 11 stolen bases and finished ninth in the CACC with a .465 on-base percentage. Stephanie DeMartino, Erica Ragazzone and junior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) all made Honorable Mention All-CACC.
 
Derby (11-5) is tied for fourth in the CACC in wins, third in innings pitched (122.1) and 10th with a 2.92 ERA. Ragazzone ended up seventh in the conference in slugging percentage at .635 and tied for 10th with 12 doubles. Redshirt freshman Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) is tied for sixth in the CACC with six homeruns. Freshman Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) tied for 11th in the conference with 10 stolen bases.
 
Preseason Prognostications:
The Eagles were selected to finish ninth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Preseason Poll as announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb. 4. The Eagles received 85 points in the poll. Defending conference champion Caldwell garnered 12 out of the 14 possible first-place votes to earn the top stop in the poll. Dominican received the other two first-place votes and earned the second spot.
 
Senior Leadership:
The Eagles have seven seniors on the roster this season. Bonamassa, Demartino and fellow senior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) were second, third and fourth on the team in batting average, all hitting well above .300 this season. DeMartino led all Post starters with a .994 fielding percentage and tied for the team lead with 26 RBI. Udris was right behind DeMartino with 25 RBI, senior Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) had 23 and senior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 19 RBI. Bonamassa led the team in runs scored with 26.
