Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Post University softball team dropped its final two regular season games Monday afternoon at Concordia in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) battle. Both games came down to the wire with Concordia coming away victorious, 6-5 in nine innings in the first game and 4-3 in game two.
Game One – Concordia 6, Post 5 F/9 The Eagles struck first as senior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored fellow senior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) to make it 1-0 in the first inning. Concordia tied it up in the bottom of the first and then added two more runs in the third to go up 3-1.
Redshirt freshman
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) scored in the fourth inning to bring the Eagles within a run. Carly Mertens then homered in the bottom of the inning for the Clippers before Concordia tacked on another run to take a 5-2 lead. Post got two runs across the board in the fifth on a single by freshman
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.).
Bonamassa scored the game-tying run in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice hit by senior
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) to make it 5-5. However, Concordia scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch. Junior
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) and sophomore
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) combined for five strikeouts on the hill.
Game Two – Concordia 4, Post 3 Post made a last-minute rally to nearly pull off a comeback win in game two, but the Eagles would fall just short. The Clippers scored two runs in the first inning and then another run in the second to go ahead 3-0. Kresley then got Post on the board in the third with an RBI single that scored DeMartino.
Concordia extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Eagles wouldn't go down without a fight. Freshman
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to cut the Clipper lead to two. Then freshman
Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in Bonamassa with an RBI single. The rally fell just short, however, and Concordia held on to a 4-3 victory.
DeMartino went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Ragazzone was strong in relief on the mound for Post. The freshman had four strikeouts and gave up two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Bonamassa scored three runs and drew three walks on the day.
On Deck: Post (22-20, 18-8 CACC) will be the No. 3 seed in the CACC Tournament held in Lakewood, N.J. The Eagles will play sixth-seeded Dominican on Thursday, May 1 at noon.
