Box Score 2 WATERBURY, Conn. – Head coach
Tracey Garofalo became the all-time winningest coach in Post University softball history since it became a Division II program as the Eagles swept USciences Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field on Senior Day. With an 11-3 victory after six innings in game one, Garofalo passed Todd McEvoy for most all-time wins. The Eagles also took game two, 6-0, giving Garofalo 145 career wins.
Game One – Post 11, USciences 3 USciences jumped out front, 1-0, in the first inning on a Devon Debellis' single. Post then took a 2-0 lead when senior
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) knocked in fellow senior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the second. Senior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) also scored on an errant throw on the play.
The Devils went back on top with a pair of runs in the third, but the Eagles came through with a six-run fourth inning to gain control. Udris led it off with an RBI single to right center, and Sclafani then scored as the Devils threw the ball away trying to catch Udris stealing second. Sophomore
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) kept the inning going by driving in Mendez and Udris to give Post a three run lead.
Freshman
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove home senior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly to right, and then Iacomini scored on a wild pitch to extend Post's lead to 8-3 after the fourth. Sclafani hit a two-run double in the sixth before Mendez wrapped up the 11-3 victory with an RBI single.
Mendez had her best game of the season, fittingly coming on Senior Day, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Junior
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) picked up her 11th win of the season, allowing two earned runs and striking out two in six innings. The Eagles racked up an impressive 15 hits in the first game.
Game Two – Post 6, USciences 0 Sophomore
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) had a strong outing in the second game to lead Post to victory. Esque (7-7) allowed only five hits and struck out three batters in seven scoreless innings. The Eagles' bats remained hot in game two as well, picking up 11 hits.
Bonamassa scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Ragazzone in the first inning. Senior
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) immediately followed that up with an RBI single to right field, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Post ultimately sealed the deal by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
Scflafani picked up her third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth. Udris, the very next batter, then hit a two-run double to left center to make it 5-0. Mendez capped off her stellar Senior Day by hitting an RBI single to center to give Post a 6-0 lead.
Udris also had an impressive Senior Day performance by going 5-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored on the day. Bonamassa had four hits in total and scored a pair of runs while fellow senior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) combined for three hits in the doubleheader. The Eagles' seven seniors combined for 19 hits, 11 runs and 10 RBI on Senior Day.
On Deck: Post (22-18, 18-6 CACC) will wrap up the regular season on Monday, April 28 with a doubleheader at Concordia starting at 3 p.m. The Eagles will be either the #2 or #3 seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament.
