Softball Earns Most Regular Season Conference Wins since Joining CACC

Post Splits with Wilmington; First 20-Win Season since 2011

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Post University softball team earned its most conference wins in a single season since joining the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) by splitting with Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon. Post (20-18, 16-6 CACC) put on a hitting clinic with a 13-2 victory in five innings in game one. Wilmington then dominated the second game, 11-1, also in five innings.

The win gave the Eagles their first 20-win season since 2011 when Post finished 24-24 and 15-11 in the CACC. The Eagles' victory also put head coach Tracey Garofalo in a tie with Todd McEvoy for most all-time wins (143) in Post softball history since becoming a Division II program.

Game One – Post 13, Wilmington 2

Eight Eagles recorded at least one hit apiece in the first game, four of whom had multi-hit games. Post put on a show offensively and scored five runs in the second inning and eight in the fifth. Junior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) picked up her 10th victory of the season and gave up only two runs in five innings.

Senior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) led things off for Post in the second with a two-run single up the middle. Senior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) then notched an RBI with a single to left center. Freshman Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) kept the rally going with an RBI single to center field. Post then took a 5-0 lead when senior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly.

After the Wildcats scored a run in the third and fourth innings, senior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) quickly gave the Eagles a 7-2 lead with a two-run double to left in the fifth. Udris picked up her third RBI of the game with another single up the middle before sophomore Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to left center.

Continuing to pour it on in the fifth, Owens hit another RBI single to bring the score to 10-2. DeMartino then snagged her second and third RBI of the game with a single through the left side. Finally, freshman Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) capped off the inning with an RBI double to right center.

Game Two – Wilmington 11, Post 1

The second game was a completely different story. Just as the Eagles did in the fifth inning of game one, the Wildcats scored eight runs in the very first inning to set the tone for game two. Derby (10-4) had a tough outing as the game two starter and couldn't get out of the first inning after giving up five runs on five hits.

After taking an 8-0 lead in the first, Wilmington added three more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Stephanie Sarris, the CACC leader in wins, was outstanding on the hill for the Wildcats. Sarris (11-6) had nine strikeouts and gave up just four hits in five innings of work.

The lone bright spot for Post in the second game was Sclafani. The senior hit her second homerun of the season with a solo shot down the left field line off of Sarris in the fifth inning. It was Sclafani's first long ball since the Eagles' first game of the season against Lake Erie.

On Deck: The Eagles will return home on Saturday, April 26 for Senior Day against USciences. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. A sweep would lock Post in for the fifth seed or better in the CACC Tournament.
