Box Score Waterbury, Conn. – A ninth inning rally by the Eagles led to extra innings before umpires called the game a 9-9 tie after 12 innings in a game against Bridgeport at Rogers Field in Danbury, Conn.
It was the first tie for the Eagles since a 5-5 tie against Southern Connecticut State University last season.
Senior
Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Purple Knights went up 2-0 after the top of the first before the Eagles responded with a double by junior
Dylan Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) that scored senior
Kevin Fearon (Williston Park, N.Y.).
Bridgeport scored four more runs in the fourth thanks in large part to a three-run double by Matt Costleigh.
Shada and senior
Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) would answer in the bottom of the fifth. Shada hit an RBI double down the line and Chavez hit a two-run single, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
Again, the Purple Knights would answer with a two-run single in the top of the seventh by Dylan Steigerwald, making it an 8-4 game in favor of Bridgeport (9-17-1, 3-9 East Coast Conference).
The Eagles would answer the call again in the bottom of the eighth. This time, freshman Drew DeAngelis hit a two-run single, scoring Senior
Alex Beland (Trois-Riviere, Quebec) and Chavez.
Time was running out for the Eagles, as Bridgeport scored in the ninth on two errors by the Eagles.
However, Beland came through again with an RBI single back to pitcher, Clayton Morris. With one out, pinch-hitting senior
Zach Brecht (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) tied the game with a two-run single through the left side of the field, tying the game, 9-9. The rally would end on a double play groundout by sophomore
Julio Velazquez (Bronx, N.Y.).
The teams would trade zeros on the scoreboard for the next three innings after stellar relief by both bullpens. The Eagles (10-11-1, 6-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) had a chance to win it in the bottom of the 12
th, but Beland was called out at the plate after he tried to tag up on a fly out by Fearon. The umpires would call the game after the 12
th inning ended.
