Softball Falls to #20 Grand Valley State, Dowling

Post Lets Early Leads Slip Away in Doubleheader Defeat

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. – The Post University softball team fell 9-1 to #20 Grand Valley State and 5-3 to Dowling on Tuesday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games. The Eagles held early leads in both games but could not close out the Lakers or Golden Lions.

Game One – #20 Grand Valley State 9, Post 1 (F/6)
Despite the final outcome, Post nearly came away with a huge upset over the Lakers. Senior Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) drove in fellow senior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.

However, Post could not shut the door on Grand Valley State as the Lakers scored all nine of their runs in the sixth inning to steal the victory. Briauna Taylor (3-for-4) put the game out of reach with a three-run homerun in the sixth.

Although she received the loss, junior right-hander Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) kept Grand Valley off the board for the first five innings. Senior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) had another strong performance and went 2-for-3 in the game.

Game Two – Dowling 5, Post 3 (F/8)
Once again, the Eagles stuck first in the second game and took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Senior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) got things going with an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly by senior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) that brought Bonamassa across the plate to give the Eagles a two-run cushion.

After Dowling tied it up at two in the sixth inning, it looked as though Post would come away victorious when Erb hit an RBI single in the eighth to make it 3-2. The Golden Lions responded as Arianna LaPuma knocked in the game-tying run with a single in the extra frame. Two batters later, Samantha Laird hit the game-winning two-run homerun.

DeMartino, Sclafani, Erb and freshman Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) each had two hits apiece for Post. Sophomore Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) went 7.1 innings with three strikeouts and gave up four earned runs on seven hits. The Eagles fell despite outhitting Dowling 10-7.

On Deck: Post will play Southern Connecticut and Cedarville (Ohio) as part of the NTC Spring Games on Wednesday, March 5 starting at 9 a.m.
