Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University baseball team looks to ride its hot streak as it plays four games this week. The first two will be non-conference games against at both the University of Bridgeport on March 25 (3 p.m.) and at Briarcliffe College on March 27 (3 p.m.). The Eagles will wrap up the week with a doubleheader at Philadelphia University on March 29.
The Eagles currently are riding a four game winning streak, which consists of doubleheader sweeps against both USciences and Caldwell College, both Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foes. The Eagles are 7-8 overall and 4-0 in the CACC, good enough for first place in the conference.
In their previous games on March 23rd, senior
Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a game-winning RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-2 win in game one of the doubleheader against Caldwell. Junior
Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) was stellar on the hill, striking out 12 and giving up just two earned runs on five hits and one walk in a complete game.
Game two saw more late-inning heroics and solid pitching.
Matt Cambria (Toronto, Ontario) pitched another complete game with five strikeouts and just one earned run in the 4-1 win for the Eagles. Post scored all four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitting sophomore
Brian McKenna (New York, N.Y.) put the Eagles up for good with a two-run single to put the Eagles up, 2-1. Senior
Zach Brecht (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also had an RBI single in the inning.
Among The Best
Senior
Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) is currently second in the conference in RBI with 17 on the season. He also has four home runs on the season, tied for tops in the conference. He is the reigning CACC player of the week.
Also putting up big numbers for the Eagles is
Matt Cambria who is seventh in the conference in ERA at 1.61 and
Don Crook who is tied for second in strikeouts with 27 on the season.
Closing The Bridge
The Eagles look to get a little closer to evening up the all-time series against in-state rival Bridgeport on March 25. In the team's most recent matchup, the Eagles won, 10-5. Currently, Bridgeport holds a 13-9 series edge.
The Purple Knights of the East Coast Conference are currently 6-12 on the season and have lost five straight games. They are led by Mike Perry who is batting .353 on the season with eight RBI. Tim Bickford leads the team in RBI with 10. Despite a 1-3 record on the mound, Brian O'Keefe has a solid 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched for Bridgeport.
Cliff Diving
The Eagles look to continue their success against Briarcliffe as they take on the Bulldogs on March 27 in Bethpage, N.Y. Last season, the Eagles took three of four games from the Bulldogs, winning 4-2 and 6-2 on April 21, 2013 and splitting a doubleheader on April 28, 2013, with an 11-1 win and a 6-5 defeat.
Not Too Much Brotherly Love
The Eagles, overall, have had CACC rival Philadelphia's number, having dominated the series, 14-6. However, Philadelphia has won the last two meetings, an 8-3 and 1-0 win on April 27, 2013.
When the teams meet on March 29, they will be battling for CACC supremacy. The Rams currently are 8-11 overall and 2-2 in the CACC. In their last two games, they split a doubleheader at Wilmington, winning the first game, 2-1 in 10 innings and dropping the second game, 3-2.
The Rams are led by Ken McCormick, who is batting .344 on the season and has nine RBI and eight runs scored. His .344 average is good for ninth in the conference. Fernando Garza leads the team in RBI with 11, putting him eighth in the CACC. Garza is also a menace on the mound, with a stingy 0.50 ERA, which puts him second in the conference.
