Recap: Eagles Stay Undefeated In CACC Play

Chavez Hits Walk-Off Single In First Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University men's baseball team swept a doubleheader and stayed undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play as it defeated Caldwell, 3-2 and 4-1 in New Jersey, which was a home game that was played away.

Game one ended in a thriller as Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to drive in sophomore Eduardo Familia (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory.

The bottom of the ninth – which began with the Eagles trailing 2-1 - started with a single by Alex Beland (Trois-Riviere, Quebec). Familia doubled, advancing pinch runner sophomore Brian McKenna (New York, N.Y.) to third. After an intentional walk to Jeff St. Pierre (Milford, Conn.), Dylan Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) hit a single to center to drive in McKenna to tie the game, 2-2.

The big story of the game was starter Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) who pitched a complete game, striking out 12, giving up two earned runs on five hits and one walk. The only time he found trouble in the game was the fourth inning, where a triple and a wild pitch led to two runs for the Cougars. Crook improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Post got on the board early as St. Pierre drove in Familia in the bottom of the second with an RBI single up the middle.

Game two saw some more dominant pitching by the Eagles, as Matt Cambria pitched a second complete game for the Eagles on the day and was rewarded with some late offensive production as the Eagles completed the sweep of the Cougars, 4-1 in game two.

Cambria finished the afternoon with five strikeouts, and giving up just one earned run on six hits and two walks.

Caldwell got on the board early with an RBI single by Phil Ragusa in the top of the second. It would be all the Cougars would get as Cambria shut them down the rest of the way.

The Post bats stayed silent until the bottom of the eighth, when McKenna, in a pinch hitting role, drove in Eric Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Pastor with a single to center field, putting the Eagles up, 2-1. After a wild pitch scored Hernandez, senior Zach Brecht (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) hit an RBI single to score McKenna for the final bit of insurance.

The Eagles improved to 7-8 on the season and 4-0 in the CACC. Caldwell dropped to 1-9 and 0-2 in the conference.
