Clermont, Fla. – The Post University softball team started its 2014 campaign Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with a dominating 10-1 win over Lake Erie and a narrow 3-2 defeat to Notre Dame (Ohio) as part of the NTA Spring Games.
Senior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) powered the offensive attack against Lake Erie. Post had strong showings on the mound in both games from sophomore
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) and freshman
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa).
Game One – Post 10, Lake Erie 1 (F/5)
The Eagles came out firing right away with five runs in the first inning. Kresley drove in a pair of Eagles with a triple, and just two batters later, Sclafani hit a three-run homerun to put Post up 5-0.
Esque (1-0) absolutely shut down the Storm striking out five while allowing only four hits in five innings. Freshman
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) drove in Sclafani with a single in the third, and the Eagles took a 6-0 lead in the fourth when Sclafani knocked in her fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.
In the final inning, senior shortstop
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) drew a walk with the bases loaded right before Kresley, who went 2-for-3, picked up two of her four RBI to end the game with a single in the fifth inning. All nine starters for Post recorded at least one hit.
Game Two – Notre Dame (Ohio) 3, Post 2 (F/8)
The starter for the second game, Ragazzone had a strong outing in 7.1 innings. She gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters, but the Eagles' offense only picked up one hit, a double by senior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Ashley Hall (3-0) struck out six over the final four innings to lead the Falcons to a 3-2 victory. Jessica Cavallero scored the game-winning run for Notre Dame (3-1) as Nataly Ciocca reached on an error in the bottom of the eighth.
The Falcons committed four errors leading to both of Post's runs. Lennox scored the first run for the Eagles in the fourth inning, and fellow freshman
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) walked twice in the game and scored the game-tying run in the top of the sixth.
On Deck: The Eagles are back at it on Monday, March 3 with a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit and Rollins College.
