COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – The Post University baseball team opened up its 2014 season against two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams on Saturday, falling to West Chester 9-1 before losing a slugfest to Mercyhurst 15-9.
Game one –
West Chester 9, Post 1
Senior second baseman
Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) went yard with two outs in the top of the first, putting Post ahead 1-0. Post held a one-run advantage until the bottom of the fourth when Justin Roman  scored on a fielder's choice hit by Rob Spekhardt to pull the Rams even with the Eagles at one run a piece.
West Chester began to pull away in the sixth inning after Matt Petrizzi knocked in two runs and scored a run of his own to give the Rams a 5-1 lead.
It was a similar story in the seventh inning as the Rams again added four more runs to put the game away for good at 9-1. West Chester finished with 12 hits, three coming from Petrizzi.
Graduate student
Jackson Geary (Wakefield, R.I.) had a strong outing on the mound for the Eagles. Geary had six strikeouts and gave up just one run on one hit in three innings.
Senior first baseman
Julien Casaubon (Jiolette, Quebec) and senior outfielder
Kevin Fearon (Williston Park, N.Y.) both doubled for Post, but the Eagles only managed three hits in the ball game. Ron Scull picked up the win for the Rams while freshman
Evan Devico (Waterbury, Conn.) was handed the loss for the Eagles.
Game two – Mercyhurst 15, Post 9
After collecting only three hits against West Chester, the Eagles belted out 10 hits in the second matchup against Mercyhurst. Shada hit his second homer of the day in the second game and knocked in four more runs.
Junior third baseman
Dylan Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with a triple, and senior shortstop
Zach Brecht (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) went 2-for-2 with a double and three walks.
The Eagles would receive another quality start in game two as senior
Matt Cambria (Toronto, Ontario) went three innings giving up just one hit and two walks.
"I saw some good things today; we put together some solid at-bats, barreled up some baseballs, ran the bases well," stated head coach
AJ McNamara.
"We have some work to do with our pitching staff - allowed far too many walks, and we weren't consistent enough challenging hitters - but all-in-all, we came away with more positives than negatives."
Post will end its weekend trip against another quality PSAC school, Mansfield at the Dinwiddie Complex in Sutherland, Va. at 3 p.m. Junior Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) will be making the start for the Eagles.
