WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team ended its five-game losing skid with a victory over Bridgeport on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles fell 5-3 in game one, but notched a 6-4 victory in the second game.
Freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) recorded a team-high four hits on the day and also drove in a run. Juniors
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) each had two hits and drove in two runs. Junior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) had two hits and scored three times.
Game One – Bridgeport 5, Post 3
DeMartino led off the second inning with a base hit to center field. Esque put runners at the corners with two outs with a single to left, but both runners were stranded as a groundout ended the inning. Senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) and freshman
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) each singled in the third. Both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch but couldn't make it home.
Jade Blair put the Purple Knights on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. Bridgeport added three in the fifth as Stephanie Pearce doubled home two-runs make the score 4-0. An error by the Eagles in the seventh allowed another run to come home.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) led off the seventh with a double to center. After a single by May, both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Bonamassa drove in the first Post run with a singled. DeMartino closed the gap to 5-3 with a two-run single to left field.
Senior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) struck out nine in defeat.
Game Two – Post 6, Bridgeport 4
Junior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) doubled to left field to give Post a 1-0 lead in the first inning of fame two. A walk and a singled loaded the bases with just one out. Mendez put the Eagles ahead 3-0 with a base hit to left.
Bridgeport got a run back in the second on a ground out and added one more in the third on an error by the Eagles.
Post answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Udris and DeMartino walked to begin the inning and junior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled to center to load the bases. Esque drove home the first run with a single to center field. The Eagles pulled ahead 5-2 as Derby grounded out to bring in a run.
Sclafani gave Post its largest lead of the afternoon at 6-2 with a ground out to second as Bonamassa came home. A single by Tiffany Irrera closed the deficit to 6-4, but the Purple Knights grounded out to end the game.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday, April 11 in a non-conference matchup against the College of Saint Rose. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
