Eagles Walk-Off With A Split Against American International

Casey Sclafani Hits Walk-Off Homer In Game One, Scores Three Runs

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team used three home runs, including a grand slam by junior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) to split a doubleheader against American International on Monday afternoon. The Eagles took the first game, 9-1, in six innings on a walk-off home run by junior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) but fell in the second, 5-2.
 
DeMartino had two hits on the day and drove in five runs to lead the Eagles. Junior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in two runs on three hits and also scored three times. Sclafani had two hits and scored three runs.
 
Game One – Post 9, American International 1, F/6
Post took control of the game with a six-run second inning. Junior Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) and freshman Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Mendez doubled to right-center to put runners at second and third with one out. Freshman Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases.
 
Bonamassa drove in two runs on an infield single to put the Eagles ahead 2-0. After a single by Sclafani loaded the bases again, DeMartino smashed a grand slam to center as Post took a 6-0 lead after two. The Yellow Jackets got one back in the third on a groundout.
 
An error at second after a single by Bonamassa put runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) put the Eagles in front 8-1 with a two-run single up the middle. Sclafani ended the game in the sixth with a walk-off home run to left-center. Senior Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) allowed just one run and struck out six over five innings in the circle.
 
Game Two – American International 5, Post 2
Lyndsey Letourneau hit a ground-rule double and later scored on a passed ball for the first run in game two. Stephanie Belanger hit a sacrifice fly later in the first inning to put the Yellow Jackets in front 2-0.
 
Post got a run back in the bottom of the second as Erb hit a lead-off home run to left-center. Bonamassa doubled in the third with one out. DeMartino drove her in with a single up the middle to tie the game 2-2 after three innings.
 
Three hits led to two runs for American International in the fifth inning. Letourneau put the Yellow Jackets ahead 4-2 with a single to center, her second hit of the game. Haley Marchand homered in the seventh for the final run.
 
Post is back in action tomorrow afternoon against UMass-Lowell. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
