WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team received strong pitching performances from freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) and senior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) as it shutout Concordia in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Tuesday. The Eagles won the first game 1-0 on a walk-off double by junior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and took game two, 2-0.
Esque recorded her third win of the season in game one, allowing just two hits over seven innings. Rice also allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high four batters in game two. Sclafani led Post with three hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y) had three hits, including two doubles, and has seven hits in her last 10 at-bats.
Game One – Post 1, Concordia 0
DeMartino began the seventh inning with a double to right field. She was pinch-run for by junior
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.). Mendez advanced to third on a passed ball. Junior
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) drew a walk to put runners at the corners with no outs. Sclafani drove in the winning run with a double to left field.
Neither team had a runner advance past second base until the seventh inning. DeMartino singled to lead-off the second inning but was forced out on a fielder's choice later in the inning. Concordia put runners at first and second with two outs in the third, but failed to score a run.
DeMartino hit a double to center field in the fourth with two outs and was stranded at second. Erb singled to center field in the sixth, but a ground out ended the inning.
Game Two – Post 2, Concordia 0
Post got on the board early with two runs in the second inning. Sclafani singled to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Rice. Freshman
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y) drove in her first-career run with a double to left field.
Iacomini came home to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 on an error by the shortstop. Esque drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but junior Christina Udria (Levittown, Pa.) flew out to left to end the threat.
Concordia got its first hit of the game in the third inning as Alexandra Mandarano hit a bunt single to third. Erb and Rice both singled in the bottom of the inning, but were standed. Rice held the Clippers hitless for three innings until allowing an infield single in the seventh.
Senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) was held hitless on the day, snapping her 29-game hit streak in CACC games.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, April 5 at home against Caldwell. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
