Late-Inning Rallies Not Enough as Eagles Drop Two At Dominican

Chavez Leads Post With Four Hits On The Day

POMONA, N.Y. – The Post University baseball team suffered a pair of one-run losses to Dominican on Tuesday. The Eagles fell 9-8 in game one before falling 4-3 in game two. Junior Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) led Post with four hits, three runs scored, and an RBI on the day.
 
Senior Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded two hits, including his first triple of the season, and two RBI. Junior Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) had a double, a single, and three RBI. Sophomore Rob Gaertner (Wantagh, N.Y.) allowed one run on four hits and struck out six in six innings on the mound.
 
Game One – Dominican 9, Post 8
Chavez singled to lead-off the third inning and later advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Shada drove him home for the first Eagles' run with a double. Junior Zach Brecht (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) came home to score on a passed ball. Freshman JJ Cormier (Hialeah, Fla.) reached on an error as Shada scored to put Post ahead 3-0.
 
Triples by Dominican in the third and fifth innings tied the game 3-3. Chavez drove in Cormier in the top of the sixth with a single to center. Diz tripled to drive in Chavez and came home on an error by the first baseman as the Eagles jumped in front 6-3. Carlos Lopez cut the deficit to 6-4 with a home run to begin the bottom of the inning. Dominican scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull ahead 9-6.
 
Chavez led off the ninth with a single and advanced to third after two wild pitches. Junior Julien Casaubon (Joilette, Quebec) drove him home with a pinch-hit single to center. Junior Jeff St. Pierre (Milford, Conn.) cut the deficit to 9-8 with an RBI single. Junior Billy Bryant Gonzalez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but the next two batters grounded out to end the game.
 
Game Two – Dominican 4, Post 3
Dominican got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Cormier drew a walk with one out in the fourth. St. Pierre singled through the left side to put runners at first and second with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning.
 
Post threatened with two outs in the seventh. After a singled up the middle by Chavez, Diz was hit by a pitch. Casaubon hit a ground ball to second base and Diz was call out on interference to end the frame. The Chargers added two runs in the bottom of the eight to pull in front 3-0.
 
The first three batters reached for the Eagles in the ninth inning. After an error by the third baseman put Cormier on, sophomore Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) was hit by a pitch. St. Pierre drew a walk to load the bases. Diz brought home the first run for Post with a single to centerfield. After an out, Shada singled to tie the game 3-3.
 
Kevin Rodriguez walked to begin the bottom of the ninth. Kenny Harrell reached on an error and advanced to second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Freshman Mick Terzi (Wallingford, Conn.) intentionally walked Lopez to load the bases. Dylan Ebel drew a walk to bring home the winning run.
 
The Eagles continue their road trip against UMass-Lowell on Thursday, April 4. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
