Late Rally Pushes Merrimack Over Eagles

Cummings Allows Four Hits, Strikes Out Seven In Game One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team took two tough losses on Thursday afternoon against Merrimack. The Eagles fell 1-0 in game one and allowed seven runs over the final two innings for an 11-8 defeat in game two.

Junior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Eagles with three hits on the afternoon and drove in one run. Juniors Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) and Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) each had two hits.  Junior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) had a two-run double in game two.

Game One – Merrimack 1, Post 0
A lone run on an error in the top of the fourth proved to be the difference in game one. Ashley Perry walked with one out in the inning. She later scored the only run on an error by Erb.

The Eagles had a few chances to score over the final innings. In the fourth, junior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a single to left field. Erb had a two-out base-hit to right and Bonamassa tried to come home for the tying run but was thrown out to end the frame.

Post began the seventh inning with a double to right off the bat of DeMartino. After Erb drew a walk, freshman Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) moved both into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Udris flew out and sophomore Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) struck out to end the threat.

Senior Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) went the distance allowing just four hits and striking out seven.

Game Two – Merrimack 11, Post 8
The Eagles came from a 4-2 deficit to take an 8-4 lead with a six-run fourth inning. Esque opened the frame with a walk and Mendez followed with a bunt single to the pitcher. Freshman Kimberly Yano (Blauvelt, N.Y.) reached on an error to load the bases.

Freshman Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) drove in the first run of the inning on a single to center field. Udris and junior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit back-to-back two-run doubles to give the Eagles a 7-4 advantage. Sclafani later scored on a passed ball.

The Warriors answered with seven runs over the final two innings for the victory. Jessica Fugazzotto hit a two-run single in the sixth to start the scoring. She and Ashley Perry hit back-to-back singles in the seventh to put Merrimack in front 10-8.

After falling behind 2-0, the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the first on RBI by DeMartino and Erb.

Post is back in action on Saturday, April 18, 2013 at Chestnut Hill. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
