ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Post University softball team managed just five hits on the day as it was swept in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Dominican. The Eagles fell 9-0 in game one and 6-0 in the second game. Sophomore
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) was a bright spot on the mound with 4.2 innings of shutout relief while striking out two.
Game One – Dominican 9, Post 0, F/5
Junior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a base on balls, but both were stranded.
The Chargers got on the board with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Julie Plante made the score 4-0 with a home run to center in the second.
Post got its only three hits of the game in a row in the third inning. With two outs, senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) had a base hit through the left side. Junior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a single to left field. Sclafani loaded the bases with a hit to right, but a groundout back to the pitcher by DeMartino ended the inning.
Delaney Childers hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put Dominican in front 9-0. The Eagles went down in order in the fifth.
Game Two – Dominican 6, Post 0
Dominican did all its damage in the first three innings as it held the Eagles without a base runner while scoring six runs. Ahead 2-0, the Chargers led off the third inning with back-to-back home runs by Kimberly Ragazzo and Ashley Corrao. Dominican pushed its lead up to 6-0 with runs on a hit and an error later in the frame.
Bonamassa reached on an error in the fourth to give Post its first base runner of the day. Junior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) drew a walk to start the fifth. Junior
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) followed with a single for the first hit as the Eagles put runners at second and third with one out. A lineout and ground out ended the inning.
DeMartino singled to right to start the seventh, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch out a double. Derby threw 3.2 innings of shutout ball in relief and struck out two.
Post hits the field again on Tuesday, April 16 at home against Bloomfield. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
