WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team was swept by Wilmington in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the first game 3-0 and fell in the second 3-1. Freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) led Post with three hits on the afternoon.
Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had two hits and an RBI. She is second on the team with 17 RBI this season. Junior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) also had two base hits on the afternoon. Junior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit her team-leading sixth double of the year and also scored a run.
Game One – Wilmington 3, Post 0
The Post offense struggled with only four hits in the first game. Esque was the first Eagle to reach base with a two-out infield hit in the second inning, but a pop out ended the frame. Brook Ash singled for the Wildcats to begin the third. She scored on a throwing error later in the inning to give Wilmington a 1-0 lead.
Bonamassa beat out a single to third base to lead off the fourth inning. Junior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) and DeMartino each reached on a fielder's choice and a fly out ended the inning.
Wilmington added another run in the sixth. Cambria Ziemba began the frame with a single though the right side. She came home as Christin Headley doubled to right-center. Another hit and a passed ball put runners at second and third with two outs. Senior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) pitched out of the jam as the next batter flew out. The Wildcats added their third run in the seventh on a throwing error.
DeMartino kept the Eagles alive with a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh. After a strikeout, Esque grounded in to a double play to end the game.
Game Two – Wilmington 3, Post 1
Wilmington got on the board with an RBI single by Jillian Stafford in the top of the first. Bonamassa had her second infield hit of the day in the bottom of the inning as she beat out a ground ball to the shortstop. DeMartino drew a walk with two outs, but both were stranded. A home run by Headley in the third put the Wildcats ahead 2-0.
Sclafani hit a ground-rule double over the left field wall with two outs in the bottom of the third. DeMartino drove her home with a blooper over the head of the shortstop to make the score 2-1.
Skye Boris gave the Wildcats an insurance run with a solo home run to left in the sixth inning. Esque led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle, her second hit of the game. The Eagles went down in order from there.
Post will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader at Dominican. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
