DeMartino Homers In Softball’s Sweep Of Saint Rose

Eagles Take Game One On Walk-Off Wild Pitch

WATERBURY, Conn. – Two outstanding pitching performances and timely hitting by the Post University softball team led to a sweep of Saint Rose on Thursday at LaMoy Field. The Eagles came from behind to take game one 4-3 and won 2-1 in the late game. Junior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit her second home run of the season and led Post with three hits on the afternoon.
 
Senior Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) also had three hits and a run scored. Junior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in a run on two hits and had two stolen bases. Junior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) led the Eagles with two RBI on two hits.
 
Game One – Post 4, Saint Rose 3
Down 3-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles had one last shot for victory. Sophomore Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) reached on an error by third baseman Rachel Reed. May singled to center to put two on with one out. Junior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice.
 
Udris drove in the tying run with a base-hit to center field as Bonamassa advanced to third. Ashlee Frazier threw a wild pitch and Bonamassa came home to give Post the 4-3 victory.
 
The Eagles took an early 2-0 in the game. Sclafani drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. Freshman Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Golden Knights answered with three runs in the top of the second and held a 3-2 lead until the seventh.
 
Senior Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) picked up her seventh win of the season as she struck out one and allowed one earned run over seven innings.
 
Game Two – Post 2, Saint Rose 1
The Eagles didn't have a base runner through the first three innings of game two. Saint Rose threatened early as Amber Loussedes reached third with one out. The Golden Knights popped up and struck out to end the inning.
 
Bonamassa was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth. Three consecutive hits by Post, capped off by an RBI single by Udris put the Eagles on the board, 1-0. DeMartino smacked her second home run of the season to left field in the sixth as Post extended its lead to 2-0.
 
Rachel Waselski had a base hit to center field to lead-off the seventh. Olivia Reeves followed with a double to put runners at second and third with no outs. The Golden Knight got on the board as Waselski tagged up to come home on a sacrifice to left. Zoe Dubois grounded into a double play to Udris to end the game.
 
Senior Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five for her fourth win of the year.
 
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 at home against Wilmington. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
