WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Post University baseball team lost its first game of the season on Wednesday against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Bloomfield, 7-6, in 10 innings. After the Deacons put up two runs in the tenth, the Eagles scored one, but stranded a runner at second to end the game.
Junior
Billy Bryant Gonzalez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) and sophomore
Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) each had two hits on the day. Junior
Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior
Bobby Rodriguez (Carmel, N.Y.) drove in a run each. Senior
Phil Sirois (Cheshire, Conn.) struck out six in six innings on the mound.
After falling behind 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Post scored in each of the next two frames to send the game into extras. Gonzalez walked to lead-off the seventh and later advanced to second.
Bobby Rodriguez singled to right field, but was thrown out going to second for the final out as Gonzalez pulled the Eagles within one at 5-4.
Freshman
JJ Cormier walked in the eighth inning and was pinch run for by senior
Ian Toro (New York, N.Y.). A single by senior
Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) and a sacrifice by junior
Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) put runners at second and third with one out. Toro came home as Chavez grounded out to first to tie the game 5-5.
Bloomfield had a walk then a hit to put runners at first and second with one out in the tenth. Anthony Koban flew out to deep centerfield to move the runners over. Joe Meola came home on a wild pitch by junior
Sean Sylvester (Berlin, Conn.). They added a run later in the inning on a triple by Eduardo Valdez take a 7-5 lead.
Shada walked with two outs in the bottom of the tenth and scored on a single by Chavez to draw the Eagles within one at 7-6. Senior
Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) walked to put runners at first and second. Gonzalez grounded to third and Chavez was forced out to end the game.
Post took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on three errors by Bloomfield. The Deacons pulled ahead with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Despite the loss, Post is still off to its best start in school history at 5-1.
The Eagles hit the diamond again tomorrow against West Virginia Wesleyan in Ft. Pierce, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
