CLERMONT, Fla. – The Post University softball team is off to its first 2-0 start since 2009 after sweeping Assumption College in its season-opener at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Sunday. The Eagles won the first game 3-2 in nine innings and took the second 3-0.
Junior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) had the Eagles' only extra-base hit, a home run, and finished with two hits. Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had one hit and two runs batted in. Senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) led Post with three hits on the day.
Game One – Post 3, Assumption 2, F/9
Each team led off the first inning with a hit, but the runners were stranded each time. Assumption got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Paige Licata and Tanya Robidoux hit back-to-back doubles as the Greyhounds to a 1-0 lead.
Udris tied the game up for Post in the fourth inning with a home run down the left field line. The Eagles threatened in the fifth inning as juniors
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) and
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) each walked to put runners at first and second but Post was unable to capitalize.
In the eighth inning, junior
Alysha Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) bunted senior
Christina Marino (Mahopec, N.Y.) over to third with just one out. The Eagles could not push across a run.
May was placed on second to begin the ninth inning. Junior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) bunted and reached on a throwing error as May came home to give Post a 2-1 lead. DeMartino singled to left field to extend the Eagle advantage to 3-1.
Ashley Impagliazzo singled to left in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in a run and move the tying run to third with just one out. The next two Greyhounds failed to reach base as the Eagles took game one. Senior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) threw a complete game and had two strikeouts.
Game Two – Post 3, Assumption 0
May led off the first inning with a single to left field. Bonamassa moved her over to second on a ground out. Udris reached on an error by the shortstop that put runners at the corners with one out. DeMartino grounded out to the pitched but May came in to score and put the Eagles up 1-0. Post loaded the bases in the second inning but was unable to score.
Udris and DeMartino reached base to begin the third inning. DeMartino stole second and the Eagles had two runners in scoring position with nobody out. After a lineout, Erb walked to load the bases. Everybody moved up on a wild pitch by Rachel Hedge as Post took a 2-0 lead. DeMartino came home on a groundout by freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.
Assumption had a runner reach first in the sixth and seventh innings, but never pushed a run across. Senior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) allowed just three hits on the day and struck out one batter.
Post will be back in action tomorrow. The Eagles play Cedarville at 9 a.m. and No. 17 West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Both games will be played in Clermont, Fla.
