NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University baseball team came into Thursday's game having split its previous two games to Southern Connecticut this season. The teams played to a 5-5 tie in 11 innings. The Eagles now stand at 8-8-1 on the season.
The Owls got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first. Matt Burns singled to lead-off the frame. He later stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Michael Cleary drove him home with a groundout.
Freshman
JJ Cormier (Hialeah, Fla.) singled to right field with two outs in the second. Sophomore
Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) followed with base hit through the right side. Junior
Marcel Chavez (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in the tying run with a hit to left field.
Rodriguez drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning with a base hit to center field. The Eagles extended their advantage to 3-1 as senior
Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) drove Rodriguez home with a single to right field.
Post loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Junior
Julien Casaubon (Jiolette, Quebec) got a hit through the right side and senior
Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) followed with a walk. Junior
Billy Bryant Gonzalez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) reached on an error. Cormier put the Eagles ahead 4-1 with a fielder's choice to second base. Southern Connecticut added runs in the sixth and seventh inning to pull within one at 4-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Burns singled and Brandon Docimo scored from first to tie the game 4-4.
Rodriguez doubled to right field to begin the 11
th and was pinch-ran for by junior
Ian Ratchford (Danbury, Conn.). Junior
Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) put the Eagles ahead 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Ratchford.
Docimo reached on a dropped third strike to start the home half of the inning and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Collin Dickson reached on an error to put runners at the corners with two outs. Burns grounded out as Docimo came home to score the tying run.
Rodriguez was 3-for-5 on the day with a double. Casaubon and senior
Ian Toro (New York, N.Y.) each had two hits. Senior
Phil Sirois (Cheshire, Conn.) struck out seven in 5.2 innings on the mound.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader against Wilmington at Renegade Stadium in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
