Toro Steals Four Bases In 4-0 Defeat To Bridgeport

JJ Cormier Leads Post With Two Hits On The Afternoon

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Post University baseball team was defeated at Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon 4-0. Freshman JJ Cormier (Hialeah, Fla.) led the Eagles with two hits on the day, including one double. Post now sits at 8-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Senior Ian Toro (New York, N.Y.) had a hit and stole four bases, the highest output by an Eagle this season. Junior Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.) and senior Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) each added a hit. Senior Phil Sirois (Cheshire, Conn.) allowed one hit and struck out four over 2.1 innings of shutout ball.

Cormier was the first man to reach base for Post with a double to left field with two outs in the second inning. He was stranded at second after a groundout ended the frame.

Tim Bickford led off the bottom of the second with a single to right field. Justin Weakley followed with a singled as Bickford tried to advance to third but was gunned down by senior Bobby Rodriguez (Carmel, N.Y.) for the first out. A triple by Matt Gagne brought home the first run. The Purple Knights added another score to lead 2-0 after two.

Bridgeport added two more in the third inning. Weekley and Nick Zieniuk each drove in runs to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Toro singled and stole second in the fifth, but was stranded there. Blair hit an infield single in the sixth and junior Julien Casaubon (Jiolette, Quebec) followed with a walk. Sophomore Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) struck out to end the threat.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the ninth inning. Toro reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and third base with two outs. Shada drew a walk and Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. After a pitching change by Bridgeport, senior Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) popped up for the final out.

Post travels to New Haven on Thursday, March 28 to take on Southern Connecticut. The Owls are ranked third in the East Region. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
