WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) had four hits and three runs batted in as the Post University softball team split its home-opening doubleheader against Mercy on Friday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the first game 9-5 in extra innings before rallying for a 6-4 victory in game two.
Erb was 4-for-7 on the day and had two doubles and two runs scored. Freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) recorded three hits, three runs batted in, and scored once. Juniors
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) and
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had two hits.
Game One – Mercy 9, Post 5, F/8
Bonamassa and Udris singled with one out in the first inning for the Eagles. Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice to second base to push across the first run. Senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) and Bonamassa led off the third inning with singles. Esque put Post ahead 3-0 with a single to centerfield.
Jessica Doria put the Mavericks on the board with a double in the fourth inning. Mercy added another run as Jillian Mondrone grounded out but Kelly Bentson came home to make the score 3-2. Doria drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning with a single to left field as the Mavericks pulled ahead 4-3.
DeMartino tied the game with a sacrifice fly to drive in junior
Alysha Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mercy put the game away with five runs in the top of the eighth. Udris drove in freshman
Erika Bowman (Slatington, Pa.) in the bottom of the inning for the final tally.
Game Two – Post 6, Mercy 4, F/5
Mercy got on the board first in game two with two runs in the first inning. Jackie Coulliard singled to right field to drive in two runs. Post cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the frame as Erb scored on a passed ball.
The Mavericks extended their lead in the second inning. Briana Panarese singled to left field but junior
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) couldn't field it cleanly and two runners came home and put Mercy ahead 4-1.
Post jumped ahead with a five-run second inning. Mendez singled to left field with one out. She scored on a base hit by Esque to centerfield. Erb cleared the bases and put the Eagles ahead 5-4 with a double to centerfield with two outs. DeMartino reached on an error by the leftfielder and Erb came home for the sixth Eagles' run.
Mercy reached base in the next three innings but never pushed a run across.
The Eagles will be back in action at home tomorrow afternoon against Georgian Court. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
