Post Volleyball Drops Intense Home Match to Nyack

Wilman and Griffin Combine for 24 Kills and 25 Digs

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team fell to Nyack 3-0 Friday night at the Drubner Center in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) battle. Despite the sweep, the match was actually quite close with set scores of 31-33, 23-25 and 24-26. Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) led Post with 15 kills and 13 digs, and freshman Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) added nine kills and 12 digs.

Sophomore Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) contributed with 14 digs, two service aces and a kill for Post. Senior Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) and freshman Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 13 kills and four block assists.

The opening set was about as exciting as it gets – an absolute battle. Two Wilman kills guided Post to an 8-5 lead, and two more kills by Wilman helped the Eagles to extend the lead to four at 11-7. Then Nyack began to comeback, scoring the next four points as part of a 10-3 run that gave the Lady Warriors a 17-14 lead.

The Eagles then used two 3-0 runs to regain the lead 20-19, forcing a Nyack timeout. Post had match point at 24-22 after a kill from Alvarez, but Nyack scored the next three points to regain the lead and force a timeout by Post. The two squads battled until the Eagles had match point again at 31-30, but the Lady Warriors capped off the set with three points in a row.

Post fell behind by three, 6-3, to open the second set, and Nyack would hold that three point advantage with the score at 14-11. The Eagles scored the next three points behind two Wilman kills to tie it up at 14 apiece. The Lady Warriors quickly regained the lead and extended it back to three at 22-19. After a timeout, Post scored three straight points to pull even and force a Nyack timeout. However, Nyack took three of the final four points to win 25-23.

The start of the third set was controlled by Post with the Eagles grabbing a 7-4 lead with the help of a 4-0 run. After an attack error by Wilman, she fired right back with three straight kills to give Post its largest lead, 10-5, forcing a Nyack timeout. The Lady Warriors bounced right back, however, using a 7-2 run to tie it back up at 12. Kills by Griffin and Wilman helped the Eagles take a 17-13 lead behind a 5-1 run. Nyack regrouped and went on a 10-4 run to regain the lead and would go on to close it out 26-24.

Junior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) matched her season high with 35 assists and also had a season-high 17 digs. Post dropped to fourth place in the CACC North standings with the loss.

Samantha Garza led the charge for the Lady Warriors with an astonishing game-high nine block assists to go along with 11 kills, two service aces and a block solo. Nyack (13-11, 9-2 CACC) propelled into first place in the CACC North with the win.

Post (4-15, 4-6 CACC) returns to action at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Philadelphia at 1 p.m.
