DeMartino and Duffy Lead Eagles To Split With USciences

Duffy Pitches 8.1 Innings Allowing Just One Run And Five Hits Over Two Games

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team split a home doubleheader with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent USciences on Saturday afternoon. Post fell in game one, 4-2, and was victorious in game two, 3-1. Freshman Cassandra Duffy (Greenville, N.Y.) pitched 8.1 innings over the series, allowing just one unearned run and striking out two.
 
Sophomore Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a single, double, and triple. She narrowly missed a home run in game two and drove in two RBIs and scored twice. Senior Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) has two hits, including a triple, and one RBI. Senior Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.), sophomore Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and junior Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) tallied three hits each.
 
Game One – USciences 4, Post 2
May led off the first inning for Post with an infield single. She later advanced to second on a bunt. DeMartino was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs. The Eagles were unable to score as a hard line drive to the pitcher by sophomore Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) ended the inning.
 
After leaving the bases loaded in the second, USciences put a run on the board in the third. Junior Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) allowed two runners to reach on errors. Haley Kavelak singled to left field to drive in the first run of the game.
 
The Devils first four batters of the fourth reached base. Udris attempted to throw out Janelle Rodriguez out at the plate, but a low throw caused the run to score. Kerrianne Jones grounded back to Cummings, who threw to first for the out, but allowed another run to come home as USciences took a 3-0 lead. The Devils added another run in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage.
 
Sclafani singled to right center to lead off the sixth. DeMartino crushed a triple to right field to drive in the first Eagles run. She scored as Udris grounded out to second base and Post cut the deficit to 4-2. Bentson and Ern hit back-to-back singles as the Eagles tried to narrow the gap further, but couldn't push another run across.
 
Post loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) was forced out at home and senior Amy Mantha (Agawam, N.Y.) struck out to end the game.
 
Cummings left the game in the sixth inning after she was hit by a line drive. She walked off the field under her own power.
 
Game Two – Post 3, USciences 1
The Eagles started the second inning with four consecutive hits. After a DeMartino double, Bentson tripled to deep right center to give Post and early lead. Sophomore Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) singled to left field to dive in another run and put the Eagles ahead 2-0.

USciences closed the gap to 2-1 in the fourth inning. SamanthaLou Anastasio drew a walk and later advanced to second on a ground out. After a single put runners at the corners with two outs, Julie Shaw reached first on an error as pinch-runner Samantha Shaver came home to score.
 
May and Sclafani singled for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth to give the Eagles runners at first and second with two outs. DeMartino hit a double off the top of the outfield fence that fell back into play. May scored an insurance run and Sclafani was gunned down at the plate, but Post extended its advantage to 3-1.
 
Duffy pitched a complete game, after throwing 1.1 innings in relief in game one. She allowed five hits, while striking out two and allowing just one unearned run.
 
The Eagles will return to the field on Tuesday, April 10, as they travel to take on UMass-Lowell. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
