WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team rallied from three runs down in the bottom of the sixth in game two to draw a split of its home doubleheader with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Goldey-Beacom on Friday afternoon. The Eagles fell 3-1 in the first game and scored five in the sixth inning to take game two 6-5.
Sophomore
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had three hits on the day, including a go-ahead double in game two that drove in three Eagles. Sophomore
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 4-for-7 on the day with a double and one RBI. Junior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) had two hits, scored two runs, drove in one run, and had one stolen base.
Game One – Goldey-Beacom 3, Post 1
The Eagles threatened early in game one as sophomore
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in the first inning. She was thrown out trying to steal second. Sophomore
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) doubled with two outs and later advanced to third on a wild pitch by Roni Peters, but was stranded there.
It was a pitcher's duel for the next few innings until the top of the sixth when the first two batters for Goldey-Beacom reached on errors. After junior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) struck out her fifth batter of the game, Peters doubled to left field to drive in the first run of the contest.
Post answered back in the bottom of the inning as Udris beat out an infield single to the shortstop. Sophomore
Brandi Davis (Magnolia, Del.) pinch ran and stole second base to give the Eagles a runner in scoring position with two outs. DeMartino doubled down the line to drive Davis in and tie the game at 1-1, but was caught off second base for the final out.
The Lightning opened the seventh with a double and a single to give them runners at the corners with no outs. Shannon Graves bunted to move the runner two second with one out. The next batter grounded out to Cummings. Samantha Alonzo doubled deep down the left field line to clear the bases and give Goldey-Beacom a 3-1 advantage. Peters shut down the Eagles in order in the seventh for the victory.
Game Two – Post 6, Goldey-Beacom 5
Seniors
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) and
Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) hit back-to-back singles to give Post two on with one out in the bottom of the sixth. May drove in Bentson with a single of her own. Sadie Jones came into pitch for the Lightning and threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third. Bonamassa walked to load the bases. Sclafani drove in Ern with a hit to right field. DeMartino cleared the bases with a double to left field as the Eagles took their first lead of the day at 6-4.
Goldey-Beacom led the game off with two straight singles to left field and had runners at second and third with no outs. Junior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) quickly got the next two outs. Peters doubled to left field to give the Lightning and early 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Jordan Waterloo singled to right to drive in another run and a 3-0 advantage after one.
Bonamassa singled to left field, Sclafani reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder, and DeMartino drew a walk to load the bases for Post with just one out in the bottom of the first. Senior
Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.) grounded to the shortstop who threw Bonamassa out at the plate. Udris grounded out to end the early threat.
The Lightning added a run in the top of the fifth on a single by Waterloo. Post got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Mantha grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop and May came into cut the deficit to 4-1 through five.
Katrina Swank hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 6-5. Ashley Zaccaria flew out centerfield to strand runners at first and second and give the Eagles the victory.
Post will be back in action tomorrow as USciences comes to LaMoy for a doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
