Eagles Knock Off Georgian Court 8-1 To Remain In CACC Tournament

Stephanie DeMartino Hits Three-Run Home Run In First Inning; Finishes With Five RBIs

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Powered by five RBIs by cleanup hitter Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.), the Post University softball team fought off elimination as it defeated third-seeded Georgian Court 8-1 in the loser's bracket of the 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Championship.
 
DeMartino drove a three-run home run over the fence in right center field in the first inning. She totaled two hits in the contest. Junior Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) scored three runs and went 3-for-5 at the plate.
 
Post (18-31) scored four runs in the top of the first. After the first three batters singled to produce a run on a RBI single by sophomore Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.), DeMartino cleared the bases with her second home run of the season to take a 4-0 lead.
 
Georgian Court (34-21) got as close as three runs, 4-1, in the bottom of the third. Alyssa Paradiso, who led the stanza off with a walk, scored on a base hit to left field by Jen Tartaglia.
 
DeMartino drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth with a two-out single up the middle, which plated senior Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) and May. After the single by DeMartino, the Eagles led 6-1.
 
Post added on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to arrive at the 8-1 final score.
 
Junior pitcher Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) improved to 10-13 with the win. She retired the Lions in order in fourth and fifth innings. She allowed four hits in the complete game victory.
